Hi everyone

I'm not sure if I'm putting this thread in the right place but here goes

I am thinking about making my own soaps bubble baths shampoo shower gels etc. to sell
My question is doe anyone know anything about the legalities of labelling as i feel that this could be a problem. Please help

hi littleone, i also am interested in making my own products. not easy! when i looked into it and checking with some people who make their own soaps etc, i discovered that each product needs a safety assessment [labelling, ingredients, how and what method and batch etc] then you need a cosmetic chemist to get them toxicology tested. i was told by someone who makes soaps that to get one item tested it would cost up to £1000 per item! if you are an aromatherapist you can make up a blend for a client to buy but you cannot do this for the general public.

You have to put on the label a list of the ingredients (INCI) in descending order i.e. largest amount first, how much it weighs, a best before date/batch number and the name of the producer, albeit if you have a website you can put the web address on it.

I am not sure of the price of getting products tested, a £1000 per product sounds a bit expensive, anyone who has a PhD in cosmetology, or a pharmacist even can do this test. The assessor will look at all the ingredients contained within the product and assess the toxicity or allergins contained within it and whether the product in his/her opinion is safe enough for public use. If in any way the product is changed you have to have another assessment on the product.

Check out Aromatics.....im sure if you do their course and buy all of your ingredients off them (they have all been certified") then it makes it easier for you ??

Hi all
thanks for your comments I am really strugling with this one as it is something I would love to do and have been told that if I bought products that have been checked ie Aromatics I would not have to have them done again. I presume trading standards would also be a good place to start, I did ring them they were a bit vague and said they would ring back but hey I'm still waiting.
I feel that it would be a great to get involved we are a bit secluded here in Cornwall and are not getting enough encouragement to be completely natural in all areas. Does that make sense

I was fortunate enough to talk to Eve Taylor not long ago. Her company makes natural cosmetics and produces essential oils. She was saying that she had had to take on extra staff just to ensure that the regulations are complied with.

You can buy stuff direct from Eve Taylor's company. Her website is www.eve-taylor.com (no connection, just a satisfied customer and a past student). Have a good poke around! My attitude is, why should I go through all this labelling stuff (I considered producing my own ranges at one time) when someone else, who produces goods to the quality which would surpass what I could do, is already doing it, and thanks to the internet, I can purchase from them and get it delivered!

Another company I recommend is Purple Flame, who also produce their own stuff. www.purpleflame.co.uk Again no connection, just a satisfied customer.

Thanks again for all your comments. I think your right chris there seems to be a lot of paperworketc to it I of course was just wanting to help others and as you say there are plenty of other perfectly good web sites out there, so think its back to the drawing board. I have been experimenting so all my friends and family need to watch out for their birthday and christmas pressies this year.

I have just picked up on this thread and was wondering if you have managed to find out any more information (did trading standards ever call you back?) I'm really interested myself in making my own face creams/masks etc and like you I'm looking into the legalities of it all!

sorry to have taken so long to answer i just moved house and been off line and of course not had time.
Nope trading standards never did get back to me I am still very interested but seem to get so many different stories from people and to be honest it makes sense that any changes you make would have to be tested as chris made the comment about Eve Taylor but i do not seem to be able to get any sense from the powers that be.
I am making my own products the aim is to make stuff for friends and family and see what they think, maybe give everyone my products for chrimbo presents this year and then see where I go from there.
