National or Federation?

After I graduate in May, I can either take the National exam or the Federation. Both are acceptable in the state of Indiana. It seems that most students at my school take the Federation exam. Supposedly it is easier, while the National is harder and has more medical terminology. I don't think my clients will care or even know the difference - but I was wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on one exam over the other? t102

My personal opinion is that there are very very very few clients, if any, who will ever understand or care about the difference.

To me, the important things are to find out if you can or can't transfer either exam to another state (if you plan to move), and be able to pass it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that probably no one has taken both. So how do we know that the NCE is harder? While it does have more questions and covers a wider variety of topics, I've actually been wondering lately if the MBLEx might be harder in the topics it does cover since the smaller topic range allows the questions to be more in-depth.

I would check out your school's library resources to compare study guides and maybe make a decision based on that, although last I knew there wasn't a published study guide for the MBLEx. I could be wrong though.

I have met a few people that have taken both exams. My understanding is that the MBLEx is specific to massage therapy. The NCETMB contains questions about both massage therapy and asian bodywork concepts and practices. The NCETM doesn't include asian bodywork questions, and more closely resembles the MBLEx. Few if any clients will ever know the difference between them, but which one you have may greatly impact your ability to move across state lines and still practice.

I've considered taking the MBLEx just to see what it's like, but I'm not quite curious enough to waste that much money.

Thrilled to see another Indiana MT on here

I was grandfathered in, so I thought "Meh, I have a husband deploying to the war zone, and the state doesn't require me to get a national cert, so why spend the money?"

Now, 3 years later, I'm studying my tail off and praying I'll pass the MBLEx by June 1st. My husband starts his last year of college in August and we're hoping to move out of state in 2012, so I'll need one or the other to obtain licensure in most states.

The thread already linked above as well as several other posts here, and the way the National was hard-sell lectured to us over and over in massage school turned me off of it. I literally squealed when the MBLEx was announced because it gave me an option/choice if I ever needed it.

If you plan on moving take the NCBTMB exam because it is valid all throughout, MBLex may be valid just for the state you are in. MBLex is comparatively easier and also costs less the requirements for each of the exams are different as well.

My instructor took both test. As she explained it, the national has more Japanese Shiatsu questions whereas the Fed does not. There is really no way of determining if it is harder/easier/better. It is all about your preference.

Which is better a bed or an apple? A bed is better for sleeping and an apple is better for eating.
