I have bought loads of 'relaxing' music CDs and they are not what I want when I get them home (not quite suitable for massage).

What music have you got and where did you get them (need CD form).

I heard Reiki Gold by Llewellyn playing over the sound system at the Mind, Body, Spirit fair at Whitby last year - it was just what I was looking for - I asked at the music and book stall and the assistant recognised it immediately and sold it to me! Nearly everyone who hears it comments on how wonderful it is so it isn't just me!!

I shall be on the look out again this year!

I also like Healing Spirit by him too.

My favourite is 'Al Hajra' (sp?) it's wonderful and so relaxing also bought it as Mind and Spirit Fair in Dundee, highly recommended. There is also quite a lot of music which you can download off the net.

Well if you're playing music in a professional therapy situation you need a licence (which costs just under £70) from the PRS.

However, you can get 6 therapy CDs from Cumana www.cumana.co.uk for £30.00, which are rights-free and mean you can use these CDs in a professional therapy situation without paying for the PRS licence, and you have the knowledge that all the money has gone straight to the composer/performer.

Hello, I always thought that I would need a licence to play music and I have been using Cumara music for sometime now as I like it too and think it suits what I do quite well, however the chappie from the PRS rang up the other day checking if I had or needed a licence, I told him I used royalty free and I asked him how much it would be to use other music too and he said that I would not need a licence if the music were to be used for 'therapeutic purposes'. If I were palying music in a waiting room for people then he said that I would need one then.
I am confused now perhaps I misunderstood the conversation with the PRS man?

Well I looked at the guidance on their website and it definitely said I'd need a licence for playing music as part of a therapy session. They may have changed it since, though!

You only need a licence for therapy sessions if you charge extra specifically for putting the music on. It's all on the PRS website.

That's great news! I just checked on their website and you're right, it's here under Healthcare premises.

I'm so pleased as a couple of months ago the PRS started leaving 1-3 messages a day on my answer machine, so I stopped playing music to my clients. Now I can switch it back on again. Hooray!

I hate to be a party pooper, but this is copied from that page:

"This policy does not cover GP surgeries or dental practices, nor cosmetic treatment and therapy areas in the non-medical sector (e.g. beauty therapy, nail-bars).

This policy does not cover non-medical day centres.

For all other healthcare premises, a licence fee remains payable."

Now I take that to mean that beauty therapy practices and holistic therapy practices are liable to pay the fee, as we are non-medical. Beauty therapy is specifically named, but holistic therapy isn't. However, as a holistic therapist, I am not a doctor and I do not provide medical services, so I must be providing non-medical services. Therefore, the exemption policy they mention does not cover what I do, and I have to pay. Sorry folks!
