Mental health confidentiality issues - advice please

I'd welcome some informed advice please. I've been asked to give a day of 'taster' Chinese face and neck massage individual treatments at a lovely day centre for those suffering from mild mental health problems. I need to do a brief initial consultation for each person but there are issues about confidentiality. I know I'm a professional and treat client confidentiality very seriously and am perhaps more cautious than most. Can I get clients to sign a disclaimer etc.. The people to be treated are obviously signing up for the experience voluntarily.
Sensible advice would be welcomed.......thank you.

hello,
when offering taster treatments it's a good idea to draw up a brief consultation card detailing the major issues including, cardiovascular concerns, diabetes, epilepsy, etc, this case in particular - MEDICATIONS.
basically any potentially dangerous situation.
if the clients are in a care facility they presuemably have permission to persue treatments from their GP. it may be wise to try and obtain this in advance for all those who'll be receiving treatments
if affected with severe learning difficulties, communication diffficulties, then you will need what's called informed consent from a care giver.
it' s a wise idea to have a member of staff/family on hand in the treatment area to see that all is above board. this again depends upon the level of learning/intellectual difficulty.
i'm not sure what the particular confidentiality issue problems you face. talk to the staff, they should be helpful.
i have worked with clients with downs, severe learning difficulties, ADHD, bi-polar and schizophrenic in the past and they love the massage and get so much from it.
if you feel unsafe, decline to treat.

Thanks tob. I found your reply thoughtful and helpful. Yes, I decided that as most of the people I would be treating would already be receiving medication i.e. are currently receiving medical treatment, then 'permission' would first have to be obtained from the GPs. I am going to send a little leaflet to the project organiser first to explain what the treatment involves.
Oh yes, the Chinese massage is really lovely. I have yet to meet anyone who does not like it.

sorry for the delay, have been busy. so glad i could be of help. hope all is going well, am looking for a similar course (chineses) in Ireland. am continually surprised by how elusive training can be.

Hi there freddie I work in care and I think the issue pivots around the status of the clients regardingthe protection of vulnerable adults regs your best course is to discuss it with the care standards manager at the centre as it can entail C.R.B. checks as well as other issues like 'no secrets' policies. all to convoluted and case specific to speculate on but easy to satisfy. g'luck. jono.
