Clients often come to the Blue Oasis Spa and Massage with pain theyโve learned to live with.
Many suffer from neck and side pain from vehicle collisions, while others have been impacted by other serious accidents, resulting in injuries no one should have to endure.
โI have a client who had fallen off a horse and had been dragged with her leg in the stirrup,โ said massage therapist Debra Moffitt. โBoth of her legs used to ache so much she couldnโt sleep at night. I truly feel happy helping others in their suffering. I want people to feel better.โ
Moffitt has worked in Shelton as a massage therapist for more than 15 years, helping her clients alleviate aches and pains.
While she does offer more relaxing and restorative massages, she specializes in pain relief and injury work, focusing herself on helping people realize that they donโt have to live with pain.
Moffitt grew up in Oregon and always knew she wanted to work in health.
โSince I was a small girl, Iโve wanted to help people and at first I wanted to be a nurse,โ she recalled. โBut I didnโt care for the medicine part of it. I wanted to be more holistic.โ
After moving to Elma 22 years ago, Moffitt devoted her time to raising children, but in 2001, she moved to Shelton and decided to pursue massage therapy.
โI had wanted to go into massage therapy for at least 10 years, but I didnโt have the opportunity until I moved to Shelton,โ she said. โI love the work I do. I love helping people. It is what I am meant to do. I feel as though it is my calling.โ
Moffitt obtained her license from the Alexandar School of Natural Therapeutics in Tacoma and began her career right away.
Along the way, sheโs learned how to bill medical insurers and how to navigate the complicated world of personal injury protection through auto insurers and the state Department of Labor & Industries; many of her clients have suffered workplace injuries and automobile accidents.
Eleven years ago, she moved her business from a location on Eighth Street to a quieter space on West Cota Street in downtown Shelton.
The hardest parts of her job are seeing people in pain and worse.
โIโve had many cancer patients who have later passed away, and I donโt care for that one bit,โ she said. โI ease physical and emotional pain as well. You kind of become a bit of a counselor for folks. Itโs painful for me to see anyone in pain, but it feels good to help in some way.โ
