Massage Table Heated Blankets

Hello,

I am massaging clients with MS and find that keeping them warm enough is a big problem. I have found loads of US website that sell electric blankets especially made for massage tables but can't find any UK websites selling them at all. Does anyone use one or know where I can get one or have any other handy hints for keeping cold clients warm?

I have heard that normal electric blankets for single beds work just as well but I am worried about it being uncomfortable or too big for the table.

Does any one have any experience of using electric blankets on massage tables? I'd love to hear from you.

I don't know about any blankets, sorry, I use a hot water bottle for chilly clients, and a blanket rather than towels in the winter time. I put the hotwater bottle on the couch under the blanket before they arrive, so that the couch is nice and warm when they lie down. Then during the treatment, I move it down between their ankle area, as this bit seems to make them feel coolest. Conversely, I have a client with MS who can't bear to be hot!

A normal heated blanket for a bed is probably small enough for a couch. Have you thought about using an infra red lamp too, such as those used in Sports injury treatment?

Be careful that you are not breaching your insurance terms - the blanket you are using will be certified for domestic use only, not commercial. If there's a problem resulting in a claim you could find that both your insurer and the manufacturer won't want to know. You accept a degree personal risk when you buy any electrical goods for your own use, it's totally different to expose a client to that risk.

My therapist brings an oil filled radiator into the treatment room in winter and puts towels on that to heat up. She puts one towel on me then a heated on on that. As she feelsa towelgo a bit cool she replaces it with another. Takes extra towel to keep it up but as a client I love it. It's like being massaged in a warm bath

Good point - I did check with the insurers before use and was told as long as it meets all elec regs and was maintained regularly they were happy for me to go ahead and use it irrespective of whether it was intended for domestic use or not. It's more likely to be a hazard to me due to the positioning of the plug sockets in my room, I generally have to unplug it anyway as I'm likely to get caught up in the wires, trip over it and break my neck (I don't think gymnastics is covered in my policy lol)

Having said all this it's obviously best for the therapist to check with their own insurer before using as they all seem to differ so much as to what they will or will not cover in the policy.
