Massage Rebate? in UK ? anyone?

Hi there,

I am a Remedial Massage Student in Australia potentially coming to the UK and was wondering what the deal is over the re; Medical Insurance rebates for you clients. Eg. They are members of medical/health fund and part of their cover includes rebates for alternative therapies. How does a therapist go about registering themselves with a Medical fund/insurnace co, and what level of qualification do you generall need.

If someone has any idea or is willing to pass on some info, that would be fantastic!

it depends on the insurance scheme the person is with and what letters you have after your name, some insurance schemes will refund all of the cost of treatment and others will refund half of the treatments up to a certain amount and other companies like BUPA do not seem to recognise anyone who was not trained in a hospital.

It is a bit of a minefield, you can go on a NHS register but that does not guarantee that Drs will refer their patients to you, the BUPA system is a bit of a closed shop for as I said they will not pay fro treatments from non hospital trained therapists but I know people who work for BUPA as remedial massage therapists in there own hospitals.

Several private medical insurance polices cover alternative therapies in the UK - but the condition, as with everything else that they cover is that the patient must be referred for treatment by a GP or consultant.

You cannot just decide a massage would be good for you and claim for it.

As to qualifications, the professional therapists on this forum will answer that better than me - but yes you must be qualified.
