Massage music

What makes so many massagetherapists choose music so into "new age" that I think many clients would prefer to not listen to by their own choice. I personally would prefer Enya, Enigma, or similar both as therapist & client.
The stereo also tends to be a portable one, which just won't make the dynamics or frequency spectra of any music justice. Even my dentist have a standalone Rotel with external speakers.

I actually encourage people to bring their own music or choose from a wide range I have in my office (including enya and some enigma). Occassionally I get requests for specific music and I do have lots of fun finding it and making a new mix cd for massage. The latest request? Chanting monks!

As far as sound, I personally haven't been in a room with "portable" stereo (like a boombox). Most people seem to have mini-stereos. I used to be a sound tech for big stadium shows so I have a tendency to be picky about sound, but honestly, I've never been in a room where the sound was so bad it detracted from the massage. In my room I have hung speakers in the corner and carefully adjusted the sound, but really my stereo is nothing high tech.

Same here, when possible I have people bring their own music if they want.

But, I have so much fun with my iTunes making mixes. I recently made one that features Chuck Mangione, Loreena McKennitt, the Police, Getz/Gilberto and others. Its still relaxing yet not monotonous. Most of my clients like it.

At least in Sweden massage therapists seems to have a preference for rare artists not being professional about their music instrument sound pling-pling to my ears .
As for myself I have a computer elsewhere feeding the music to room stereo. Avoiding any fan-hums etc (Ethernet & SP-dif).

Have you asked if you can bring in (or at least choose) your own music? I've asked for a change during a session and no onne has minded. I'm personally not fond of mixes, for example -- I like to hear one artist all the way through . . . I guess I always find out what my clients want to hear that day too though. It's so easy to control!

I have a Bose system for my IPod. I have about 10,000 songs available at the flick of a fingertip with something for any taste. The sound quality is sueforum.xxx and there's no clicking, shuffle, CD-changing sounds and with 72-days worth of music I never run out of music in the middle of a session.

Maybe it's rather that's it's a lone instrument with someone lacking passion and a good post-processing of the recording that makes it sound not bad, but rather lack of any good in my opinion.
I'm in Sweden btw.
