Massage & Liposuction???

Hi everyone!

A friend of mine had liposuction done on her legs and her doctor has recommended her to have some massages done to speed up the recovery.
Apparantly her legs are quite bruised and swollen at the moment, so I'm a bit concerned if it would be safe to massage her.
(I haven't seen her legs yet, though....)

Has anyone got any experience with liposuction and massage? Is there anything I should do or think about?

you must really consider the procedure to be an injury, so depending on how long ago your friend had the liposuction would depend on whether massage was contra-indicated,
things to consider are, incision scars and wounds, the stage at which the bruising is presenting,ie the colour. Personally I would not consider treating anybody with red/purple/ black bruising, but would consider when it has turned yellow, but colour alone would not be the only decision, palpate the area to check for signs of swelling or lumpiness and base your decision on your findings, however as you have sensibly sought advice, I suggest you follow your instinct and delay massage until you both feel comfortable.
If in doubt always air on the side of caution, best regards to you both.

well her doctor is obviously happy so you have the all clear from him, obviously they will be talking gentle massage with some lymph drainage incorporated assumedly as deep tissue would not be appropriate at this stage. If your friend is happy and you are there is no problem, make sure she doesnt have a temperature on the day and that wounds are not leaking.

Recommend MLD as done by a Vodder practitioner - can generally start work as soon as they wake up after surgery!

If doing 'massage' keep it super light, and work away from the area of bruising doing effleurage.

I know an MLD therapist who trained in MLD specifically to work with a plastic surgeon doing liposuction and "butt reconstruction" in Argentina. It's all the rage over there must be something to do with J-lo
