Massage and epilepsy

Hi all

I've just qualified in Swedish massage and I'm hoping to use this privately and also at work ( I work at an epilepsy centre.) Does anyone have experience of massaging people with epilepsy? ( I'm really eager to do this as I know how desperately these folk need physical relaxation and human touch.)

Any input would be highly valued!

I think i would take a first aid course.
I remember going to a holistic talk about patients having analyptic shock on the table. I tell you it was something that wasnt covered in the course i had done, and maybe it should have been, as it certainly made me sit up and listen. I wasnt practising then and havent used it, but if i was i would be aware of it. They were saying that certain oils could cause it, or something else that you were unaware of.
I know it is different from epilepsy and as you work at the center you probably know all about it, so you are fore warned.

Thanks for the input and encouragement - I guess I'm looking for the best way to really relax these guys and wondered if anyone had had particular success with certain massage strokes etc. I think the best way to go is to have a really indepth and ongoing consultation with each individual - what feels good one week might make them feel awful another.

Just want to get it perfect!

Hi Nicky, I used to work at the centre where you are working and am now married to someone who is epileptic. I am starting a reflexology course in September and would be grateful for any advice that you have picked up regarding massaging people with this condition.

I have found that massaging patients with epilepsy has a calming effect upon them, as does reflexology, but don't do anything that overstimulates - a light slow massage is effective and don't use the following essential oils, hyssop, rosemary, fennel, sage.

Hi Abigail - great to hear from you. I'm still waiting for the OK from my Dom care manager to start - everyone else is enthusiastic - multi sensory therapist, the college nurse, the principal, but it has to go to Central Management to satisfy H&S worries (as a former St E's employee you'll know how long that can take.) Still. it's worth the wait as I know how great it could be for our guys to be relaxed and pampered in this way!

Thanks Binah - I'll be playing it safe and sticking to base oils for now!
