Male reflexologists

Do male reflexologists find it difficult to get clients? What about visiting etc. Just curious.

I trained with two chaps and I got the impression that they were both OK on this score. I think at the moment they tend to treat people they know and friends of friends, ie on a word of mouth sort of basis.

I know one male reflexologist who has given up trying to build his practice and now only treats friends. But then I know another who has a very successful practice! I think how successful you are depends on how determined you are, and if you have to work harder, ie because you perceive being a man will make it more difficult, you will probably be even more successful in the long run! I have found my age a slight problem in setting up and establishing my practice. I was 23 when I qualified (and some say I look younger) and the first question I'd often get asked was "how long have you been doing this for?" One even came out and said that they expected me to be at least 40!! So we all have our obstacles to overcome, but if you want it enough they won't be a problem. Good luck!

Hi,

I get the odd client via recommendation and from websites such as this.

I find that most women just love having a man at their feet although some of our Asian and Indian clients DO prefer a female therapist - which is why we are a husband and wife team!

I tend to do most of the home visits but - if my wife knows the client, she will visit them if asked.

We all do our bit to make our clients happy and relaxed.

I thought I'd have problems, being a man, but so far so good. When I was studying, my examiner told me of a male reflexologist she knew (I was the only bloke in the whole class) and although he found it slow in building up a client base, once it was established, his clients never went anywhere else. She was saying this because she had experienced that alot of her clients would 'try out this new lady', etc.

I've not found it a problem discussing any of the conditions women have come with - I think it's more the way you handle yourself than the sex you are. When I first started practicing, 80% of my clients were ladies in the menopause, comming to have their hormones balanced!

Hi,
Have been practising reflexology for nearly three year. So far I haven't had any issues from ladies reciving treatment from me. I ofeten have a pre-consulatation on the phone before I have my first treatment with my clients. I have found that it I am professional on the phone, giving clear and precise information, I find that this usually reassures my poential clients.

I am a male Reflexologist (amongst other things) and most of my clients are female. However I work in a centre environment. I have never experienced a problem discussing "female problems" with any client. In fact they seem pleasantly surprised with the level of knowledge.

The greatest complement in this respect was paid to me by a fellow therapist yesterday. She asked my advice - she was going on holiday with her boyfriend in a few days time and was about to start - how could she accelerate it and get it over with quickly. Having given my opinion she returned the next day to thank me as it had brought her on early.

I think as long as your approach is professional and a matter of fact there should be no problems.

hi ken,

i am sure i know the answer to this but would you tell me what reflexes you recommend working on and how often to get a period to start earlier?

my daughter is going on some outdoor expeditions soon (duke of edinburgh awards) and looks likely to get hers, certainly for the first one (womens luck and all that!).

i was going to go to the docs and get the pills that delay it but i'd prefer a natrual remedy and a few days earlier would be fine. BUT if it doesnt work, she's scuppered.

I think one of the reasons it seems that there is not so much of a problem being male in Reflexology, is because we're not asking anyone to strip off and handle their bodies!!!

Most of my clients talk to me like I'm a kind of Doctor (they know I'm not, and I certienly don't encourage them to think that way) but they know I'm well trained and aproach my treatments in a professional manner.

I think all these things and what has been said before all add up to re-assure our clients.

I was doing quite well at building up clients in London, but I have to move about a bit with my other work, so I sometimes find it hard to keep people. In order to help with my advertising, I wonder if the reflexologists on here could say how they got into reflexology?

Hi Rosie,

Can offer no guarantees - I worked the uterus and ovaries and showed her how to do this. It was evident to me that she was about to start from the feedback I received and so in reality I cannot be certain it helped. However, stimulation of an area would normally cause some acceleration, so it may be worth a try if a day or so away from normal cycle. Anything longer is unlikely to work. You could also add the endocrine system to the areas worked as this will stimulate the hormone process.

Hi Matt,
To be on honest, I don't know. It was something I saw when I was younger and was absolutly taken in by it. Once I coudl train, I did so.

I would say it was something inside me that prompted me to train.
