Lemon Essential Oil

Does anyone else find this brings them out with dermatitis? I do get eczema on my hands, but when I use lemon essential oil my hands are covered in tiny blisters for weeks afterwards!

I love the smell so used to like to put a few drops in my bath water.

One day I suddenly felt my skin tingling all over in the bath - really unpleasant. I didn't connect with the lemon oil until the next time I used it in the water - and hey presto - same reaction.

Thankfully it wasn't eczema - but then I don't use oils in my work - so prolonged contact was only for bath time. Have avoided it since.

I am wondering whether lemon grass oil would have same effect?? The smell is wonderful with that too. Although according to my V.A. Worwood book - slightly different applications for aromatherapy.

Yes, also Bergamot, but only on my right hand, which I find quite odd lol

Hi the safety information on Lemon Oil is that it is non toxic but may cause dermal irritation or sensitization and is to be used in low doses.

If the skin has become sensitized it will be more sensitive to the same irritant in the future, when it may cause a rash, blotches, itching or blistering even if very dilute. Care should be taken with Geranium, Ginger, Pine, Juniper, LEMONGRASS and a patch test before using any essential oil in the future would be recommended.

Hi Judith,
Yes. You will find that Lemongrass might be even worse in terms of irritants and sensitizing.
How about LIME? As it is steam distilled and not cold pressed, it is much less likely to cause irritation and is much less sun / UV sensitive as well.

I use it all the time in my kitchen! 80% pre-boiled water 18% vinegar and 2% lime - smells and cleans brilliantly...

I was taught not to use citrus oil in the bath.
Its such a shame when people become sensitive to oils.

Hi Serenity,

This is probably due to the acid within the oil. Lemon is my favorite oil, but like yourself, my skin becomes chapped and dry if I use 'any' of the citrus oils directly onto my skin. I prefer to use it in an oil burner.
