hi there i came across this website on the recommendation of a friend and thought that someone might be able to help, or put my mind at rest.

I want to train in massage but im too embarassed to try this. Im a large female and it requires a tunic, yet i have looked for my size and cant find any can anyone advise

Also when doing massage i assume that there is practical and that students learn on each other, i personally havent had a massage as i have always felt too embarrassed to even consider it. But i do want to try massage as i would love to learn hot stone therapy.

Any advice ? Has anyone, is anyone in the same situation

Aw, Pigtails, what a shame that you're so self conscious about your size. I'm not a masseuse but I have had loads of massages and I wouldn't care less about how big you are. In fact, I would possibly even feel more secure in the presence of a big masseuse and I bet you'd be great at it. Also if your fellow students were practising on you, I expect they'd be delighted to have someone a little larger to try their skills on. Please be brave and remember that everyone has something they're self conscious about. In my case it's my lisp - and yet I make a living by talking to people (I'm a tourist guide.) Everyone is special...and although we're all different, we're all one too. Go on, take the plunge - and I bet one of the therapists on here will be able to help with details of where you can get a tunic.

I took the plunge this year to train in massage. There's quite a few of us larger ladies on the course: I'm size 22 top/20 bottom (more like 18 these days!), my friend Sally is size 26 and another lady is 22 - 24. We got our uniforms from Trafalgar. Their published biggest size is 24, but if you ask they can get bigger ones. There are also some skinny Lizzies there too!

To start with, you train on each other, but then you have to work on clients. It's good for you to experience massage so you know what hurts, what to watch for, how to treat other people, but some of us prefer to massage other people rather than be done ourselves!

Believe me, size is not an issue. If you become a masseuse you will have to see all sorts of sights and some of them aren't pretty let me tell you! But you're not looking at the person and thinking "god how gross - yuk": you're thinking "how can I best serve this person and give them the best ever massage".

Not sure about tunics as I don't wear them myself anymore.. so follow ChrisRams advice and see what they have to say.

There's nothing like going on a massage course to change your attitude, even the skinniest folk have things they don't want people to see, flabby bits, cellulite.. we all have it.. we're all a bit sensitive about things.. but doing the massage courses can really change how you feel about yourself.

To be honest, and my colleagues know this already.. I love working on people with a bit of flesh on them, in fact, the more the better, you can really get the soft tissues moving and you don't feel that you might break the client. If I was in your class, I'd be chuffed to be able to partner with you.

Dont let it stop you, Im a size 22 and was very shy about doing the course,
there were a couple of ladies about my size, and it was ok, I overcame my shyness and enjoyed it very much. You can get larger sizes in tunics, The style the college I went to didnt suit me or fit well at all, so I got a tunic from a different place and changed the buttons.

I am quite a large female as well, (size 22) and when I first took the ITEC Holistic massage course I felt rather self conscious at first about people practicing on me, but that was soon layed to rest as no one seemed at all bothered and I was just worrying unnecessarily, plus there were other ladies on my course that were quite big too. I recommend that you definately go do the course and not let your weight put you off. I can assure you wont regret it!
I agree with gussie in all what she said. I too prefer to massage people that have got more flesh on them. My tutor used to get really stuck in with me, she thought I was great to massage on.
Just think how good you'll feel after having all those massages, its great!

They go up to a size 26! make sure you do your measurements before ordering, they have a size chart so you know which is the best size to order, I have found with alot of tunics that they come up smaller than your regualr size. I was very pleased with mine.The tunic arrived the day after I ordered it, how fast it that eh?

Hi all

Thank you for the pm's and replies. They are greatly appreciated, and i have taken in your views.

I have decided that i will go ahead with trying to get on a course and will voice my concerns to the tutor i think, prior to starting it.
i am currently learning Indian Head Massage and am enjoying that thoroughly.

I will keep you all informed as you are a very supportive, fantastic grp of people and im glad i found this site


Been looking for tunics * though thats not my biggest (lol) issue and found some that will fit
