Is Calgary a socially conservative city?

I understand that Calgary is a fiscally conservative city since many oil companies are headquartered there. As a Texan, I understand Calgary has a lot going for it like a young and active population, ethnic diversity, lots of parks, etc. These factors are not mutually exclusive with American social conservatism, but you would expect these things of a liberal city in the U.S. I also understand that religion does not play that much a part in social conservatism in Canada. For a major Canadian city, is Calgary that socially conservative as everyone says it is?

If you dropped Calgary in the middle of Texas, they'd seem like a bunch of left wing atheistic heathens. But, in the context of major Canadian cities, they're pretty conservative. There is an element of religeous conservatism, but not a big one, and no more than anywhere else in Canada. Theirs is more of a red neck brand of conservatism.

But I haven't been there in a while. Things may have changed. They elected a person who belongs to a visible minority as mayor, after all. Based on a quick glance at his website, he doesn't look like a right wing nutbar. He acknowledges that poverty is a social problem. That counts as being a commie in the south, doesn't it?

Alberta as a province is very conservative. They've only voted conservative for decades. Steve Dubya Harper is currently from Calgary, although like a lot of Calgarians, he's originally from Ontario. The Liberal and NDP political parties barely exist in Alberta.

Not speaking politics, Calgary is such a laid back city, common courtesy is all that matters.. Say hi to passer bys, wave when some on let's in in while driving. Please and thank you are the only words necessary while in Calgary... Best city for it's size

Compared to other major cities in Canada, such as Vancouver and Toronto, Calgary is pretty conservative. However, like the other poster said, any Canadian city will look like a bunch of left-wing commies compared to Texas (they're a bunch of right-wing wackos if you ask me). One thing to remember is that, compared to the US, the entire Canadian political spectrum is shifted majorly to the left.

That being said, Calgary is an amazing place to live.
