Is an invitation letter a requirement now to visit singapore?

I have a plan to visit singapore this month. As I know nothing about the country policy for tourists, I made some inquiries and got a few same informations. They told me that the immigration will ask me for a letter of invitation from a resident of singapore. Is it a new policy? What if I dont know anyone from the country? Please assist me. Thank you.
 
Why don't you just go the Singapore tourism web site and look it up? I have been there a few times recently and never needed anything other than a passport.
