Is an aromatherapy qualification essential for burning oils?

Hi,

I'm about to begin my AOR reflexology course. I always burn essential oils at home for my own personal use and get great benefits from them.

When I eventually qualify as a reflexologist I would like to burn oils whilst giving treatments (I'm not planning on training in body massage and so would not be using oils on the skin). My question is whether it is important for me to complete a qualification in aromatherapy? Or whether simply reading up on the oils I burn would be acceptable?

I would love to complete an aromatherapy course but with my aor course and working full time, time is very short!

I would say you could burn fragrance oils, not essential oils, someone else may have a different answer x

Since you aren't technically using the oils as part of your treatment then I doubt you need any qualifications. I would just point out though that people can have very varied reactions to aromas and you would want to be careful with you oil choices.

I'd say you don't need to have a qualification to burn oils but you did need to have some knowledge about the oils you are using. Some oils are not recommended for use with epileptics and pregnancy even through inhalation so you need to be aware of this. Speak to your insurance company too to see if there are any restrictions.

Many people use essential oils in a burner without being an aromatherapist - stick to some safe essential oils such as the uplifting citrus oils which are safe to use as a general rule and you will be fine you only need about 6 drops.
