How many of you trade your services?
We are constantly being asked by our hotel partners to trade chair massage services for their employee events, which highlights one of key issues in trades/barter.
The "list" price on a hotel room is the city approved rack rate, which no one ever pays unless there is a citywide event/convention and every room in town is sold out -- $350 a night and up! But that same hotel room -- often when we want to travel -- is on Hotels.com or some other deal site for 50% or more of a discount from the Rack Rate.
Something that has a variable value -- like a hotel room or plane ticket -- is not usually a good candidate for a trade, unless you are also trading something of variable value. But massage is not one of those things.
We try to trade massages for restaurant vouchers -- the menu has prices that don't change by demand -- and we trade pretty close to $$ for $$ -- an hour of massage = dinner for two. We can use these trades oursevles when we are in town or we use them as rewards for our employees
If we do end up trading for hotel stays, we usually donate them to local charities and pass along the list price as the value of the donation for trade purposes.
