hope someone can give me advice?

Hi,

I had call from a new client who wants me to give her a body massage, she left massege in my answering machine, saying her neck is playing up and she needs good massage, but she also said she normally goes to a Ostepath, as far as I understand doesnt Ostepath normally manipulate with the bones, but i do swedish body massage, so I'll be working with muscles, I'm worrid if she has problem around the bones in her neck, would it be still ok for me to massage the muscle around her neck, or should I ask her for a letter from GP. Does that sound like local or genral Contra-Indication. please could someone help me, before i give her massage.

Hi Farideh

Massage will probably do more good than manipulation, it could be that the osteopath has recommended massage to release the tight muscles.

It is not very often you come across something which is not muscular in its origin and the neck could just be playing up because of general tension which is the domain of massage.

Hiya farideh

when you chat with her find out why she was visiting an osteo, this could have been down to company healthcare (they dont pay for us massage types!!!!!) or indeed maybe she had whiplash etc then this will give you a better idea of what you may or may not be dealing with....

If she has said she needs a good massage then do just that!!! (obviously assuming there are no reasons not too)

I agree.

I was lucky when I did my massage course. The teacher was a Shiatsu and Sports and Therapeutic masseur, and he taught us a very good neck massage. Consequently, most massage clients come to me for neck and shoulder problems. After manipulation from an osteopath or chiropractor, the muscles can be very tight, as they go back into a more correct position that they are not used to anymore. There are also other factors, like stress, habits, posture and the condition of the musculo-skeletal system in general that may have an effect on this tightness.
