Help re-massage with epilepsy??

Hi everyone

i have been approached by a client who would like a massage,
but she does have a history of epilepsy
last attack a couple of years ago

i know that this is a total contra-indication but would any type of modified
massage be ok??

I have never heard epilepsy is contraindicated - they need massage treatment as any of us.

Gently around head/or skip it (don't overstimulate the central nervous system) - and watch clients reaction.

There is often a characteristic smacking noise when epileptic is deeply relaxed - but it might indicate a fit. Always ask for a feedback.

I have to agree with londonmassage here I have not come across this as a contra indication and not had any problems treating epileptics, the worst case scenario is they will have a fit which although not overly present to watch is not life threatening in itself and they can usually move about 15 to 20 minutes after the fit.

If she has not had one in a couple of years I would not consider it a potential problem

Whether it's indicated depends on your training and your insurance company.

I regularly treat a chap with massage who is epileptic and without any problems, I agree with LondonMassage as to how to tailor the treatment, so far no problems and it's been a year now. I tend to be very observant of how he reacts and if he starts to stare I normally ease off just to be sure as I am told this can on occasion be one of his early warning signs.

thank you for yout prompt reply,

i was trained at my local college and in the info pack that comes with the massage it states that epilepsy is contr-indicated.

as im still new to this im probably being just being very caustious
at the mo i like to make sure ive got as much info as poss.

i seem to be asking all of you for lots of help on the subject of massage,
as im new i worry about making sure im doing things right

would you ask for gp permission in the case of epilepsy?

i dont my first proper massage (with payment ) today i was so nervous
i thought id be sick on the floor! my mouth went dry too (must take some water next time)
but i found that once i got into it i relaxed.....thankfully otherwise id be going around relaxing everyone while making me more tense everytime....(ha ha)

oh sorry one more question if you dont mind
what movements in swedish massage would you use in this case would you leave out the more stimulating ones like
hacking,cupping,beating,vibrations ??

i do see this person on a regular basis through my part time job so i get to see them on almost a daily basis, i feel i have built up quite a good rapoor with them so hopefully this will help.

do whatever you want on legs - but be gentle around the head.

do something about your nervousness (probably you need more practice) - your movements might become uncoordinated/chaotic/jerky and client would feel your emotional state.

try to take a long, hot shower or bath before giving massage to help you relax.

there are no total contraindications in bodywork - just a matter of adjusting the treatment to each client

I was taught that epilepsy was a total contra indication on the basis that they could injure themseleves falling off the couch if they had a fit . On this basis a massage on the floor would be ok
