Help me?(newbie driver)?

OK well im 17 and i've been driving for about two years (but only with a parent in the car), im not that bad at driving but im not exactly the best. My biggest problem is getting lost, i could go to the same place 10 times and still get lost on my way there, but this only happens with places that have lots of turns. Anyway i wanted to know if getting a gps system would be a smart idea? And also what can i do about driving on major highways, i haven't before but how do i go about learning how to do so?

Well, using a GPS as such an inexperienced driver would not be the best idea, but at the same time it would help you get where you need to go so that you do not get lost. I would suggest using a GPS but only to a certain point. If you feel that you will get lost on your way, then make sure to have one handy. GPS systems can be helpful but can be a hindrance if you pay too much attention to it. The key is knowing how to divide your attention between the road and the system. So I think you need to decide if that is best for you or not. I don't see why it would be a bad idea, but make sure you do not give the system too much of your attention if you use it. Secondly, driving on a major highway is something you will just have to get used to. The only way you will learn how to deal with it, is if you put yourself out there and drive. Reading about how to handle highway situations is a good idea, but at the same time, I suggest you begin driving in highway situations. That is the only way you will become comfortable. Have a parent drive with you, if you are nervous. The more you do it, the more you will be ready for those situations. You learn by doing, not just reading.

If you get a GPS spend the money for a talking unit.

A highway is just a long street, same rules apply.

If you have trouble finding places again, I think a GPS would be a great investment. It can't hurt other than your wallet.

Driving on highways is just like driving anywhere else basically. Be careful when merging into traffic. Most people will try and make room for you but some will not so be careful. Also get up to the speed of traffic on the onramp. There's nothing more aggravating and dangerous than having someone get on a highway/interstate at 45 MPH and then speed up. Stay in the right lane unless you are passing someone. The left lane is not a personal cruising lane.

I used to have the same problem with directions and i was a bus driver !!! My problem was i use to concentrate so much on driving and worrying about getting lost that i never took notice of my surroundings or memorizing the route. Don't worry about it. It will just come natural when your confidence grows. Good luck.
As for the GPS, they are always handy to have just in case you do get lost.
