Grapeseed Cooking Oil

Was just wondering if anyone uses Grapeseed cooking oil as a massage oil. Someone told me they buy the cooking oil instead of massage oil. Its like £2 for 2 litre bottle in a supermarket.
I have actually tried the oil and to be honest if I didn't know it was cooking oil, I wouldn't have know the difference especially if I was a client.

So is there a difference between the cooking oil and the massage oil apart from the price?

This is what I use and save myself a packet, it was around 89p in Asda.
(By the way I also cook with it and find it very good for this purpose.)

I think the difference is something to do with the pressing of the grapeseed, but someone else may have a different answer x

it certainly does work out cheaper. Some of the 'therapy' oils are cold pressed, so are more beneficial for the skin, as they retain more of the vitamins, however, thats the only difference.

I used to use 'cooking oil', however, I used sunflower, as grapeseed really stains towels and its so hard to get out.

The main difference is grip !

The supermarket stuff is super slippery and is great for superfisal work.

If you do alot of deep work like I do, you would need more gripp so the more natural the oil the better !

Hi I once did a course were the tutor told us to buy a good grade of cooking oil such as oilve or grapeseed as she maintained if it is good enough to go into your body it is good enough to go on it.

I use good quality massage oils because I like to be able to talk to my clients about their properties and give them a choice between the different types. I see this as adding value to my business and wouldn't be able to do it with cooking oils.

Hi Myarka I do not work as a therapist and only practice on my friends and family. I think if I was charging people I would stick with base oils. However I have used a good olive oil when I have ran out of almond or johoba oils.

I know next to nothing about massage oils, but in our nutrition course oil processing was covered fairly comprehensively - see Udo Erasmus's book Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill - briefly we are being conned by the food industry about oils, especially cooking oils (and margarines). These go through a rigorous process of extraction under chemical solvents, heat and pressure, filtration, evaporation, deodorisation, etc. by which time most of the benefits of the virgin oils is lost, but they add in vitamin E to stop it from oxidising to extend its shelf life. None of our lecturers recommended consuming cheap cooking oil - only cold-pressed virgin oils.

As oils that are applied to the skin are absorbed through the skin, my comment is that perhaps one should look at top grade, cold pressed virgin oils for use there. Gapeseed oil should obtainable in that form and has many benefits too. Unfortunately having an organic label doesn't avoid the oil being damaged by the processing methods. This is one of several reasons we are short of a balance of essential oils.

I'd prefer a massage without the cheap cooking oil variety!

If you are going to use grapeseed oil for massaging, then you might find it useful to mix some soya oil into, it slightly changes the consistency and makes it better for massaging.
