Frankincense and Bereavement

I was shocked to hear, from a VTCT trained therapist, that they were taught that Frankincense Boswellia carterii is contraindicated in those who have recently been bereaved.

Have any other therapists been taught this? I completely disagree and believe that Frankincense would be beneficial for people who are grieving. I was concerned and shocked that such a statement could be made.

hello! i have never heard that either. maybe it is because it is not an instantly uplifting oil? or that it's too calming and may lead to rumination?

i love rose and frankincense together. if such a blend was used during the grieving process i think i might leave it behind once i felt like i was coping better, as it's remind me of sad times. some people would find the opposite tho and be reminded of the strength and comfort it gave them.

Well I'm sorry but I totally disagree - when I lost my fiance very suddenly to leukaemia I used frankincense all the time and it helped to calm me and deal with everything. I still use it today if I'm having a wobble.

If I have a client who has had a recent bereavement it is the very first oil I reach for,

I'm studying an ITEC course and have been told that it is helpful for bereavement! and this is one of my favourite oils

I'm trying to think of a reason for this, and I can't to be honest. It's certainly one of those I'd use for a bereaved person: Valerie Ann Worwood says it's useful for "releasing old hurts".

I think perhaps a better oil for this purpose may be galbanham, but it's smell is not as nice as frankincense. I wonder where this therapist got her information from?

Frankinsence and geranium was a great blend for a friend of mine when her mum died unexpectedly

cant say I can find anything in my books saying that it is a contra indication for bereavement

I did VTCT Aromatherapy and we were taught that Frankincense is an excellent oil for bereavement as it's emotional effects include comforting and soothing the emotions and healing emotional wounds.
