Ethical Dilemma

Hi Everyone! I have an ethical dilemma this evening...

I gave a classmate a massage at my house tonight. This classmate left a tip on the dresser in my massage room which I didn't notice until they had left. I and my classmate both know it is illegal in this state to accept any payment for massage until you are licensed (tips included). I really appreciate the fact that this person thinks so highly of my work, but I'd really like to ring their neck for doing this. I'm one of those people who plays by the rules, and there is no way in heck I'm risking my future licensure on a tip. I am almost sure this person will refuse to take their money back (bless their heart), and I'm pretty sure they aren't out to get me (ie give me a tip, then review me to the Board). Truthfully I'm not going to lose any sleep over this, but I'm wondering what y'all would do. Would sneaking the money back into this person's backpack during a break at school suffice if they refuse to take it back outright?

PS - It's so strange. I felt so disconnected and "off" giving this massage, but my classmate just absolutely raved about it afterward. This is a person who has trouble sleeping under the calmest and quietest of circumstances. They go for days on end with no sleep at all (PTSD), but tonight they fell asleep on the table. I'm baffled. :?

Emily--I have been here several times as a student- I would always recieve tips from my clients.I would just politely return the tips to them,if they had already left or I would give them to my instructor to put into the "class fund" for CD's,DVD's,etc. But in your case,just return it as soon as you can,and remind them about the "no tip" policy. I do not think they were trying to set you up,they were just appreciative of your work. My Fundamentals instructor used to say if a client fell asleep on the table,it was a great thing,as the body was just accepting the work,and benefitting from it.It shows you just are doing great things and starting the body's healing processes!

That's a good idea - to give the money to our instructor if my classmate won't take it back. I really don't think my classmate was out to get me either. We've done some work together in the past (outside of class) and they've always been very appreciative.

Now I wish I had asked for an exchange instead of just giving this person a massage. I could *really* use some work now. It's been about three weeks so I'm starting to feel it. I'm not in any pain per se - at least not severe pain. I can just tell things are not quite right if you know what I mean.

Oh well... Friday I'll get to sit in on my best friend's first Reiki treatment, and then I'll have my own monthly hour of bliss a week from Wednesday . I can't wait!!

I am feelin' you on that one!Once you get more massage,your body will relax and accept the work. I truly need a hot stone massage right now,as my traps are tight and I think my rhomboids are rebelling against me too....I did a chair massage gig last Wednesday,and I am still feeling it today. That's why exchanges are better,everyone gets work,and doesn't feel obligated to tip. Just enjoy soaking in the wonderful energy in the Reiki session,you will enjoy the recharge!!! Keep smiling and enjoy your time in school learning....it's a blast!!!
