Doggy with arthritis

Hi everyone,

My Mums dog (Jessy) has arthritis in one of her shoulders and I was wondering if anybody knew which oils would be suitable for use on dogs. I know they have different skin type to people, but this is not an area that I have any experience with. Mum is keen to try essential oils rather than have to keep giving Jessy tablets from the vet as these can only be taken for a max of 6 weeks then she has to have a break. Mum has been told that Jessy will probably be limping for the rest of her life and the idea that she is in pain is quite destressing.

Be grateful to anyone who might know more about this area.

As an aromatherapist, I would be wary about using essential oils on animals for this kind of problem.

There are holistic and homeopathic vets around if you're looking for a more natural solution. There may be something under the animals forum on this site.

Hi, I too have a dog with Arthritis and currenty use a BIOFLOW and have fantastic results. My dog does not take any pain killers. Try one I cannot recommed them highly enough.

Not an essential oil. Try Glucosamine. You will see good results.

My 6 year old long haired German Shepherd suffers with arthritis. Every now and again I massage his coat with one drop of lavender oil to about 10/15ml of water. He loves the massage which is also combined with a bit of Reiki! But he is a big dog with a long coat, I would be wary doing this for a small or short haired dog. I also break a cod liver oil tablet in his food - I was once told by my psychic that 'what works for humans will work for dogs' and she recommended the cod liver oil.

This is just my experience and I have taken on board what others are recommending.

our german shepherd also wears a bioflow collar, this helps, although she is 14 now, she has herbal remedies to help her feel better

Essential oils are great for animals with arthritis and will give great pain relief, however the animal must have selected the one(s) that it needs. It is incorrect that we select the oil, that we believe appropriate and apply it to the animal, as it could be toxic for them. However, when the animal enjoys the scent of the oil then this is acceptance.

With animal aromatics (aromatherapy) then the oils are not applied to the animal's coat in an oil base but to the local area in a gel, once the animal has selected the ones that he needs. An animal will inhale or sometimes try to lick the bottle of an oil that it NEEDs either way it is absorbing the oil to help with its condition.
