I was at an essential oils in the cancer care environment workshop last weekend and one of the very interesting subjects that came up in the conversation was the use of diffusers. Diffusers are used for various different reasons along with the obvious one of having a nice smell in the air. Depending on the oils used the action may be anti-viral, anti-infectious etc, disguising malodours etc. Rhiannon Harris recommends that after 15 mins a diffuser has put enough oil vapours into the air to be effective and it should then be turned off (or blown out as the case may be) and only put on for 5-10 mins per hour thereafter. She recommends that an electric diffuser set on a timer is the most efficient and safest way of vapourising the oils.
An example that was used was a Doctors surgery.
It was recommended that the diffuser be set to work throughout the night and not used during the day. 1 hour on then 5-10 mins per hour. The action of the diffuser during the night would clean the air of microbes.
It was also recommended that if using a vicks steam inhaler or similar that only 1 drop of a blend be used. The reason was that inhaling too high a dose can actually lead to retention of secretions.
I came across the following link on facebook and it looks really good. Jane Buckle has even left a testimonial for it. The devise is ultrasonic and the Essential Oils are not affected by heat. I wonder if it is on sale on this side of the world.

The course certainly gave plenty of food for thought. I for one will be much more aware of how long my burner is on. As Therapists we are more at risk of becoming allergic or sensitive to our oils than our clients are because we have a much greater exposure.
