Death of a client

I had some bad news yesterday. One of my elderly clients passed away unexpectedly during the night. I had built up a good bond with him and his family as he and his wife had a massage every week. I know he had a good life and didn't suffer any pain but I still feel very upset. I want to send a sympathy card but don't want to be too intrusive or un-professional. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think sending a card would be a lovely idea and i'm sure appreciated !!

Our boundaries in complementary health are generally a little looser than other professions, and as such we do tend to become "friends" with many of our clients. I sure do, and hope it stays that way .... I wouldn't hesitate to show your sadness and I definately don't think you would be intrusive in doing so.

Definately send the card. I have sent many now, as I treat palliative clients - the families all appreciate it - I keep in touch with many of the relatives as we built up great relationships during treatment.

Got to agree with Meridianmoon and Jabba I'd send a card, also think I'd go to the funeral. Would stand to one side obliviously think it would show you care which you do being your'e asking what to do. When my grandfather died many years ago our local doctor was at the funeral and my family were really touched by it.

I think sending a card is a way to express your sympathy for the sadness the family are feeling. And perhaps it will also allow you to let go of the upset feelings you have about his passing away? It sounds like you're very good at looking after others in your role as a therapist. It's also important to take care of ourselves when the need arises. Giving ourselves space to express sadness in an appropriate is a natural part of healing.

I would certainly send a card.. My personal experience from the client's side: Some years ago a cat I had died at the vets after being taken ill. A few days later I got a sympathy card from the vet, and I was really touched. I certainly didn't consiser it unprofessional, in fact it is one reason I have used the same vet ever since. ( I did get a bill as well, but they left about a week before sending it out)

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I am very grateful for all your comments. I am going to send a sympathy card later today and will ask the family if I can attend the funeral.
