Ok, I tried looking for a more direct answer to this question but I haven't found it yet....

Is cupping (the one where they use cups) classified as energy work or is it a massage technique?

I am also from Texas. As you know the state of Texas declares that massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissue with the intent being therapeutic.

In cupping blood and lymph are moved for therapeutic reasons. Both of which are considered soft tissue.

However, I am not sure if Texas will allow cupping courses to count for CEU credit.

Yes.

Cupping is one of those things that can transcend the energy/physicality dichotomy. Which is a distinction we make up in our heads. Get small enough and I'm not sure you can really locate it in anything that could be called "reality"...

So, what information are you really asking for?

I don't know what the OP's motivation is, but in many states you can practice (and charge for) "energy work" without license or certification, whereas "massage" is regulated.

Cupping is classified as massage therapy because you touch the body with your hands or hand-operated simple tools with the intention of manipulating the skin and muscles. In a few states (and I don't know about Texas,) cupping is specifically excluded from MT scope of practice, so check your state rules.

It would never be (legally) classified as "energy work," but it does certainly move blood and qi, having a particularly strong effect on "seforum.xxxnation" which are somewhat energetic concepts.

Personally, I mostly use cupping on triggerpoints, spasms and adhesions, all very physical applications.

Just wanted to say thank you Breathe... that motivates me to try cupping on some physical issues (one client comes to mind immediately)... we were only taught cupping in school from an energetic perspective.
