Cupping Massage

Hi all

I would like to know if i really need to attend a course to include cupping into my massage routine. I have never had it done, but have heard you can receive good results through applying it.

I am an Advanced Sports Therapist, so i know what i'm doing, i justd wanted to know if i need a certificate or can i just learn from a collegue. I have done a little research into it, and it doesn't look that complex, however i have seen a couple of one day courses for around £100 -£150 which i think is a little excessive.

Any comments will be appreciated.

By cupping, do you mean with the hands, or using the cups. If it is using the cups I was taught by an Acupuncturist who is also a massage therapist, we were only taught the cups along the bladder meridian on the back. I have to say I don't use this technique myself now, but have heard it is quite effective for the relief of pain.

if you haven;t done it how will you know how to do it without being taught?

I dont think your insurance will cover you for something that involves a life flame without you holding a certificate.

£100-150 is not excessive for something else to add to your portfolio.

I have done a cupping and moxibustion course and would never dream of doing it without proper training. Same as hopi ear candling. Both are very easy to do but you NEED to be shown how to do it properly first.

cupping can also be done using a pump to extract the air rather than a flame.

I think it would be wise to do a course so that you know exactly what you are doing.

You are right that cupping isn't complex, but there are health and safety issues, and not forgetting contraindications. Also bruishing will occur. You also need to receive it as well to have a sense of how clients will feel.

Hi,

I am a sports therapist and an acupuncturist, so have been taught the cupping through my acupuncture training. I have to say that it is very effective for some conditions and for tightness, but have to confess that I find that my hands as a tool for sports massages are a lot more affective. With a cup you cant feel what is going on under the skin in the muscles, where as with a hands on massage at least you can feel the areas that need the work.
I do think it is a useful tool to have but if money is tight then it is not a necessity. I hope this is helpful

Now are you talking about the Chinese practice of cupping, which involves applying glass utensils to the skin and burning moxa to remove the air so the skin gets sucked up into the cup? Or are you talking about the Swedish massage petrissage move of cupping?
