CRB Checks

Hi all,

Just wondered what the age is that I can treat people with holistic massage without being CRB checked, is it over 16 or 18?

Hmm, the ages between 16 and 18 are fluffy in legal terms and depends on various factors.
Ideally, you should treat 18 as the age of an adult as there is still potential for offences to be committed as if they are children at 16 and 17 if you are considered a person in a position of trust. i.e. a teacher having a sexual relationship with one of their 16 or 17 year old students is considered an offence, even though 16 is the age of consent.

It depends on the nature of the business your in and whether it's considered a position of trust etc. I'm not sure in terms of holistic massage, though you may be best to check with your massage association and also your insurance company.

CRB checks are not just for treating children, but for treating the vulnerable as well. Normally massage therapists are not required to be CRB checked. There is no reason why you can't treat the under 18s without a check, but you would require a chaperone who is either a parent of gardian. Although even if you are CRB checked, it would be wise to have a chaperone present when treating the under 18s.

That said, your insurance may have other limitations to who you can and can't treat. But as Energylz said it's best to check with your Professional Association first.
