Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a practitioners course. I don't have any experience in massage although I do reflexology and indian head and neck... I guess Swedish massage - or what would you all suggest?

I live in Essex... and could easily/happily do a intesive 1 week course or weekend course?

Any advice would be great.

Not sure you would get a 'cheap' intensive course anywhere. You may need to extend the training time if you want to reduce costs. Most local further education colleges have massage therapy courses, generally done over a couple of terms - check out your local college website for course availability.

I can highly recommend the London College of Massage - they are a great group of people, and well respected. You may want to look at the ITEC courses which can be found all over the courses, in London the Clare Maxwell-Hudson school offer these.

I definitely agree with Fozzyo about the LCM. With regard to ITEC, it is worth bearing in mind that (as has been discussed on this forum), the standard of such courses varies very widely. I began my massage career with an ITEC course. I was very disappointed with the quality of the tuition: we had much less practical massage than the 50 hours which ITEC recommend, and we weren’t taught the importance of basic body mechanics and of having the couch low enough to ensure that the massage is effective. And although I passed the course, I was so frustrated with the poor training that I felt the need to go on a short course at the LCM as a ‘top-up’ before proceeding to a sports massage course.
It is also worth noting that even the introductory LCM course includes both abdominal and gluteal massage, whereas it is clear from this forum that some ITEC tutors don't include either of these on their courses.

Hi there

I definitely wouldn't recommend a weekend intensive course....I think you really do need to learn both the practical and theory side and you simply can't do this in a few hours/days. I can recommend the Brentwood Academy....they do ITEC and VCTC courses. Good luck xx

If your considering learning any type of massage, I would definitely not recommend an intensive course. Give yourself time to enjoy learning it, for me it was a journey that has yet to end. My experience was as much experiential as it was inlearning the technicalitysofthe strokes and all the A&P.But buildingrapport, presence building, learning to deal with everything from your clients nudity andthe act of undressing to devloping sensitivity in your hands. All this takes practise andyou only get thisfrom practising with the support of regular tutorials andexperiencing massage yourself in a college.

I'm sorry but I can't recommend any colleges as I'm in Scotland. I practise Therapeutic Massage and my course was 10 full weekends monthly, thisseems tobe the standard

I did a few ITEC courses, which werent intensive, and found them substandard. I then did an intensive course with Active Health Group and realised that I had previously wasted my money, as I was taught how to release my potential as a therapist by AHG, which meant that I could offer the best treatments to my clients. AHG also teach you that you have to grow as a therapist, which can take years, but there were other students on my course that had done ITEC and VTCT courses who thought that they knew everything! which I found quite strange, as they had just paid a hell of a lot of money to be taught!
