client with spondylosis - massage question

Hi all,

I have a new client that has presented with Spondylosis Im not quite sure if this is a contraindication to massage, but my instincs tell me that my client will benefit from massage, am I right? she has a lot tension and nottinessin her neck muscles and requires some relief.

Hi I have this condition (and also studying Indian Head Massage) it is a local contraindication for that, you have to bemore gentle when working the muscles in the neck area Hope this helps.

Yes, strictly speaking, it's a GP Referral contraindication. I assume you're talking about Ankylosing Spondylitis?You should try to speak to your client's GP or get a letter from them saying that it's ok to massage, to cover you for insurance purposes.

It can manifest itself in different places on different people and can flare up or be in a dormant state. If it's dormant, I shouldn't worry too much. My husband has it, but at the moment, it only effects two of his toe joints, which he loves being massaged, even though that's not strictly soft tissue!

If you're seeing them before you get the GPletter, it should be OK to work around it, so long as you're not causing any pain. Make sure you explain all of this to your client, get them to sign a disclaimer, and note in their client record what you've done and why... then you should be OK.

If you're worried about insurance, ask your insurer for advice.

Cervical Spondylosis is not a contra indication, as you stretch and relax the muscles you will remove a lot of tension from the affected areas, which will improve the movement and reduce the associated pain.

This is a bone problem often similar in nature to arthritis though with this there is a serious probability that the vertebrae will fuse together, for this reason it is important for the patient to keep themselves mobile, if they keep themselves stiff due to the pain it will speed up the fusion process which is very undesirable in the long run.

Thanks for all your advice guys, much appreciated, and I am sure my client will benefit from the massage treatments, and find some relief. She keeps herself very active normally, sothere shouldnt betoo muchfearof stiffening through fusion of the bones hopefully.
