clarification please!!!

Hi everyone

Could any of you clarify this for me? I am a qualified massage therapist but not aromatherapist ('aahh' I hear you cry, 'that old chestnut..!')

Anyway, up until now I was of the thought that I can't use essential oils in my treatments (obviously!) and also thought that included pre-blended oils / lotions ie you can buy it off the shelf for personal use and thats your own look-out, but not use as a practitioner on a client for insurance purposes.

However, just heard another train of thought that says you CAN use pre-blended (ie massage lotion with lavender or whatever ready mixed) as it has been produced at 'safe' quantities.

Hmmmm - now I'm confused!

If anyone can spare the time to clarify this, I'm sure, common question...THANKYOU!

mmmmmm yes that old chestnut! I have no idea about pre blended oils to be honest but oils are contraindicated with many ailments etc and so is that knowledge clearly stated on the bottle?......"not to be used with high bp etc....... although im sure there is hardly any essential oil in there anyway that would cause any disaster it is worth thinking that if you bought a pre blended mix from Boots that had lavender in for relaxation it is not just a case of lavender and almond oil........the ingredients list would also contqain parabens etc etc as those fat cat companies want to make sure thier products last for years on thse shelves......so you are not applying a pure product to your client....just a thought>x

I am doing aromatherapy however our tutor did say that any one could use a pre-blend eg there was nothing to stop a anyone qualifed in say swedish using a pre-blend and calling it an aroma-massage BUT they could not call it an aromatherapy massage as the oils were not blended specifically for them.

its funny you should mention parabens...

i've just gone and got one of my pre blended dermalogica treatment oils out the box........
it has 3 different parabens in the ingredients, and 7 or 8 essential oils listed.
it does smell gorgeous though!
it say's on the box that proffessional recommendation is advised....

holistic bliss - i should think that if you purchased some oil like this a dermalogica supplier would be happy to tell you when their different treatment oils can be used, and when they shouldnt be used

i do charge my clients extra for having a swedish with this oil, but only a few quid, and i wouldn't do an aroma massage with it.

thanks for your thoughts, wasn't sure if anyone would want to get into this discussion (again!) or not so your input is much appreciated.

The more views I hear on this one, the more I think maybe I could use them - to clarify, I was thinking of the TUI range of massage waxes that are pre-blended with essential oils so quality products rather than local chemist jobbie!

I think asking my insurers would be a good way to go too.

Oh,,,,,the tui oils are ones that i know of alot of massage therapists use they are more like a\ wax really and i a m sure this will be ok as i know the therapists that use it wouldnt take chances .
