Chair Massage Business Ethics

I've been doing some chair massage through several companies located outside my area. They have made it very clear that it is not acceptable to engage in any self-promotional activities with the clients. I have had several people request a business card from me and so far, I've politely explained the situation and not handed out my card.

I need the business and in the present economic situation, I feel that I can't afford to give up potential private clients.

I would appreciate any input from anyone familiar with the situation.

If you would like to keep doing chair massage with these companies, I recommend you stick to your agreement. Plus it is the ethical and moral thing to do: Staying true to your word.

If you need more clients in your private practice you need to do some marketing outside of these chair massage jobs. And if these chair massage jobs are not serving your needs, perhaps you should look for other chair massage work.

I wonder why they don't want you promoting yourself. I would let them know what is going on and offer them a referral fee or something if they are open to it.

Most companies have a "No Solicitation" policy.

In the case of chair massage, this is a benefit being provided to the employees. You are a vendor, there to do a job, not try to drum up more business for yourself.

Can you imagine the chaos in an office if the painting crew went around handing out flyers to come paint your house? Multiply that times every other vendor that enters the building and you have a good reason to prohibit solicitation/promotion of services.

I agree with Pete, get clarification.

But in the end, the best you can do if they say NO promotion, is to make sure each person you touch knows your name! FULL name! If they want to find you then at least they can google your name and get contact info.

You could also wear a good name eforum.xxx with your name and company name engraved on it.

And/or, when you introduce yourself at the beginning of the session, say Hi, my name is xxx of XYZ Massage.

if you have an agreement with them, then there isn't much you can do. If they provide table massage in the area I can understand to a point. It does cost them money to get those jobs that you benefit from. However if they only do chair work maybe you could work something out with the company explaining that you only want to be able to provide a card if asked for table work. Just be above board and honest about it. You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you right? Also from personal experience, and I do a lot of chair work, the great majority of people that request your card never end up on your table. So you may not be losing as many potential clients as you would imagine.

I have to concur.

We have a client who hires us every year to do chair massage at a big event (hundreds of attendees.) We have permission to hand out cards if they are requested. After 5 years, we have yet to see one appointment made from this event.
