I stay many times per year in Shanghai and my favourite hotel is the Pu Dong Shangri-La. I always met the girls downstairs in the BATS bar. One of the hotel employees told me recently that I should be careful with the local girls. Once you take them with you to your room they go to the toilet and send a message to friends telling them in which room she is. 15 minutes later before anything started, but you most probably are lying naked in the bed someone is knocking at the door and the girl is opening immediately. It is (fake?) police telling you that things you are doing there are illegal, but by paying a quite huge amount they will take the girl away and leave you alone. I think before ending up somewhere in Shanghai police station or somewhere else everybody is paying.

I don't know if this is true, but reading all the other stories here I can imagine it is.

Dong Guan is located half way to Guang Zhou from HK..Some KCR trains from HK to Guang Zhou will stop there..

Fair enough, the reason I frequent china is that the business partners in various fields are there to make a buck like us, but most importantly, they are true to their work ethics and workmanship.

I would not go that far to declare all men in China are conmen. They are mostly very nice people. Remember that the ones working in the sex industry are in for money and money only. This is true in any countries. I thought it is important to make this distiction.

sad to hear that...actually i totally agree to beware of these people, coz chinese in china are all conmen...i've dealings with them, all they want is $$$, unethical and can do anything jus to gain $$$.

I have been in Shanghai a dozen times and found there are lots of scams in various forms. Since you are likely to involve in either illegal or immoral activities, you are not willing to report to the police! This is where they get you and force you to pay!

I recommend go straight to some sauna places and pay for your action. You have to be extremely careful not to be fooled if you go to a bar or KTV.

Not most likely..It is tea...I used to have a girl friend that works in a bar and for each drink the customer buys her she gets a chip that she can redeem for $5.00USD each..Each night she comes home with a dozen or more..I wonder if a person can down 12 drinks and be able to find her way home..

Most likely the Whisky is fake, probably Pepsi or Chinese Tea, those girls downed 7-8 shots of Whisky and still pretty sober is pretty wild. I tired downing 3 shots of Whisky and after that i am pretty fucked up already.

You are right about it. It's really a waste of time & $ at these places around Nanjing Road. You wouldn't believe how fast the girls down the whisky, just like fish. Now actually I wander whether that's real whisky, as each of them down 7-8 glasses with in 10minutes. That's why we did not managed to stop them till we notice the glasses were all over the table.

We should share more of these tricks/scams here, so that our fellow members will not fall in to the same scams. Hope that my loss of RMB5850 is value lesson/experience to alert our fellow members traveling to Shanghai.

Why didn't you guys stop the girls from buying more drinks after you guys agreed to buy them "a" drink? I'll tell you why because you guys were too drunk and horny and can't think straight. These KTV bars and coffee shops all over Nanjing road are a waste of money and time, most of these places are "setup scam bars" waiting on foreigners who can't speak or read Mandarin. You guys let your penises do the thinking and that's why you got scammed and the "paperwork for the safety of the girls?" come on...dude that's a bunch of fuckin' bullshit, it doesn't exist. Better luck next time.

Thanks for sharing your experience edwin, its quite a horror story, 5000Rmb is ridiculous, they think every foreigner is an "economic miracle" or something.

I can't believe how the authorities are allowing these scams at such a large scale though, its interesting, but I've never noticed cops on Nanjing Lu before.

I hope fellow memebers read through all this, its quite useful.

Dr PP you are right. We should share more of our experience of misfortune here, to help other fellow members to beware of all scams like these. The following is what I have experienced in Shanghai near Nanjing Lu as well.

Me and my colleague were there last week on business trip. In the late evening after a heavy business dinner, we decided to take a walk down along The Bund for some fresh air. A young chinese lady approached us and started a very friendly conversation, and offer to bring us to a nearby place that she knows around Nanjing Lu for a couple of beers and we can check out some shanghai chicks there. We agreed and we have a short walk followed her to the place she mentioned, it is a KTV & Pub. And she introduce us to the manageress of the outlet and call a few waiteress to serve us. I was very caution about the charges and requested to see the price list, and we were told that as long as you consume drinks the room is free of charge. And the chicks we tip them separately according to our likings. If later we would like some massage service from the chick it can be arrange at RMB100 for normal massage, RMB300 for massage with full service and overnight service at your hotel till 12noon the next day for RMB500. So before we proceed any further, we was assured that there's no other hidden charge. We have a look a the drinks price, and it was reasonable. So we agreed and proceed to select our girl. Six girl came in our room, and there's two of them about 7-8 rating so we ask for them. And my colleague is a bit excited about it wanted to go for the overnight option, so we told the manageress that we decided to go for the overnight service. The manageress then mentioned that we need to sign some papers for the safety of the girls before we leave for the hotel, and ask us to wait while they prepare the paper. She then ask whether we want any drinks while waiting. We refused, then she mentioned that the outlet did not make any money on the service we required as we are paying directly to the girls, she then ask whether can we just buy a drink there as the outlet need some business to survive. After hearing that, just to show some support, we agreed to have a beer just before we go. Within seconds, we were served. Our girls were with us all the while, the manageress then suggest instead drinking alone can we buy a drink for our girls. As a gentlemen how can you refuse, at the same time how much could a drink cost, so we agreed. As usual the drinks were serve within seconds, it was whisky that these girls ordered. We chat for a while and it starts to warm up and the girls began to be naughty too touching and rubbing all over our private places which get us so excited. We wanted to leave immediately to head back to our hotel. But the manageress keep saying that they are still preparing the papers to buy more time while the 2 girls keep ordering more and more glasses of whisky. At this point, we feel that something is not right as the whisky glasses were all over the table and I counted, there were 15 glasses ordered all together within 20 minutes. And we put a stop to it and ask for the bill, to our horror the damage was RMB5850 and it state that 30 portions of whisky which cost RMB160 per portion. I argue with the manageress and she said she is manageress of the girls not in-charge of the F&B and then call the F&B manger to talk to us. A guy came in a said that each glass consist of 2 portions of whisky and said if we required he is willing to prove that each glass consist of 2 portions of whisky by bring the measurement cup. At this point it's very clear that it's a scam and we just wanted to settled the bill and leave as soon as possible. So I give them my creditcard asking to settle the bill, and the F&B manager said them don't accept creditcard. And we were force to draw cash from ATM as we were escorted to a nearby ATM to draw cash to settle the bill.

While we were drawing cash at the ATM. We also saw some other foreigners being escorted there to draw cash to settle their bills. And they are not in the same outlet as us. So fellow members, please beware of this type of scam when you are in Shanghai, it is everywhere in Nanjing Lu area.

After reading a fellow member's misfortune on Nanjing Lu (in another thread), I think its important for all would-be Shg adventurers to realize and stay away from scams like these which may be prevelent not only on Nanjing Lu but elsewhere too. I think others should also contribute their mis-adventures in this thread.

The following is a quoted review from some Tourist site on the web where some bloke was ripped off.

"While walking down the pedestrian street, Nanjing Rd., a young Chinese woman began walking next to me and explained that she was a student, wanted to practice her english, and could she walk along with me. After a few hundred meters, she suggested having "coffee" and she knew about a great coffee shop on the 7th floor overlooking the seforum.xxxe, near the Howard Johnson Hotel, on Nanjing Rd.. Well, once up in the restaurant, a couple of "coffees" ended up with a bill of over 800RMB! When I protested, a couple of large Chinese blocked the elevator until I signed a credit card slip and added another 10% for using a "foreign" credit card. I'm American, but there was an Aussie in the restaurant having the same experience. I really felt there was no alternative but to sign the charge slip and get out. I'll protest the charge with the credit card company, but I don't know if that will be successful. I should have insisted on going to Starbucks!

Just don't go. The place was named S.U.N.D.A.Y., and is located above a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet.

If someone suggests going up to S.U.N.D.A.Y., suggest instead talking to the police."
