hi i wonder if any one can help me i have a problem with one of my cats she insists on spraying at the bottom of the front door curtain she has been splayed so i dont know why she is doing this i also caught her doing it to the sitting room curtains any indea of a oil i can use on the curtains to deter her cos as you can imagne i am getting sick of washing the curtains every time

Cats hate citrus smells.. if they have a favourite place to go to the toilet, which you don't approve of put orange or lemon peel there or rub it into the area.. my beighbour swears by this in her garden.

I would imagine the appropriate aromatherapy oils would be similarly successful, however you would need to make sure it didn't stain the fabric and that you replenished the oil frequently to keep it fresh.. you may find just pinning a scented cushion behind the curtain is enough and less damaging?

Cats do not normally start soiling indoors for no reason. If she is always picking the curtain by the front door it maybe that something been there before her, a stray cat you may not be aware of? She is possibly re-enforcing her "territory". Another reason is that she may have a bladder or urinary infection, once she has found a spot to use she is likely to stick to it.
Along with citrus oils and peel, pepper is a good deterrent, no harm to the fabrics at all and will just make her sneeze.

thankyou will try these we do have two cats and i wonder if one is getting a little too bossy to the other one .i have caught her a few times chasing the other one so i wonder if she is marking her territory but will try citrus oils

One of our male cats keeps spraying on the kitchen worktops. The vet said he's likely to be feeling stressed in some way - maybe a new cat in the neighbourhood. We haven't been able to pin down the cause of the stress, but the vet recommended a plug-in diffuser thing that gives off facial pheromones. Humans can't smell it but cats can and it makes them less stressed apparently. I think you can also get it in a spray bottle for spraying on the areas that they spray.

We bought one of the diffusers but the results are inconclusive at the moment. You're supposed to plug it in in the room where they are spraying, but we can't. You're also supposed to use it for several weeks before you start to notice a difference.

Sorry, this isn't an aromatherapy related answer, but thought it might be of interest.

One of my mother's cats began urinating on the kitchen work tops, how awful....I told her to rub onion juice or vinegar on the area (hard surfaces!), it seemed to work but only temporarily. It turned out the poor lad had senile dementia and has recently been put to sleep because of this, he was over 20 y/o tho!

Is anyone aware of any E.O's that cats enjoy or that helps to relax them?

I don't think it is a good idea to use EO on cats. They lack the abilityin their body to deal with EO. Not forgetting how potent EO are. A tiny drop is the extract of pounds of flower or bark etc. It is even toxic to them.

I'd make up a citrus room spray to spray where the cat goes. If you catch her, you could spray her at the same time!!! It will do the job of retraining your cat, at the same time it will make your room smell nice!!!!

Lemongrass is a good one to include, since it is a deoderant as well!
