Can I do This

My massage instructor said that we could give massages for donation. However, when I asked if I could do that at the Yoga studio I work at he said no, because it is a place of business, and that we can only do it out of our houses. But I don’t have my own table yet. He said I could loose my ability to get my license over this if someone reviewed me. Does anyone know if this is true or not. Regardless of that, what would you do in this case? I really want to be able to do this because I could probably stop delivering pizzas, which I’m sure, my body and my truck would appreciate. Thanks everyone!

Potentially, yes, because you are performing massage without a license. Working on people that you know for practice is one thing, you know they won't review you. Working on the general public, even for donations is still an iffy subject.

Hey mattH, Laws probaly vary state to state but here in Wa you cannot do massage for $$ without a liscense or even accept tips or gifts if you are just doing work on a practice client. Donating time is up to us and we are actually covered insurance wise thru a school policy as long as we only do what we have been trained to do in class. There are lots of deserving underserved populations that would probaly love to volunteer themselves to you for practice. My school actually has a requierment that you must do a certain amount of volunteer massage and it does not count as your out of class practice time. I have actually put alot of time into researching different populations to do my voulnteer time with so if you need some ideas then pm me. I am working with a group of women who run a non-profit horse rescue. Think about what interests you and go from there.

I think it's crucial to find out what the laws are in your state. In my state, this would be perfectly legal. The owner of the yoga studio may not want someone "practicing" there though. It may be his desire to only have a professional who has finished all their training. That is his perogative as the owner of the business.

Before doing anything, I would suggest finding out the law so you don't jeopardize your future.

it would be legal in my state as well. one thing you would want to make sure you have is your own insurance. once you accept money for your work, your school insurance wouldn't cover you anymore.

In Missouri it is against the law to accept any kind of reimbursement at all as long as you are a student. But, laws are different from State to State, and I don't know about Illinois law. If I were you, I would get a copy of Illinois law (which you can probably get from your school) and look up the law. If it is against the law, you CERTAINLY CAN lose your ability to get licensed. I'd be careful and abide by the law - just to cover your self. StrucMedgirl.
