Could a private company hire enough mercenaries to keep it's oil field in Nigeria free of bandits, or would it want a government diplomatic effort backed up by military force to ensure it's investments?

People hire armed guards to transport money. Why cargo ships and tankers aren't armed with deck-mounted machine guns is beyond me. Drill 'em full of holes and let them die at sea.
