calories burned during massage

hey..I was on a web site I think called Spark people..and it estimates calories burned and it said for an 130 pound person you burn about 264 calories burned per hour giving a massage..not bad eh? :

I read in Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizin's book "You: On a Diet" that you burn 6 calories per minute! No wonder I feel hungry after a session

That's awesome! I used to use a site to track calories in vs. burned (http://www.fitday.com) and it always gave me loads of calories burned while giving massage all day....lol.....made me feel warm and fuzzy

I've noticed that when I work sometimes I feel or start getting dehydrated. :shock: Has anyone else had the same feeling? Maybe its all those extra calories I'm burning.

That might be some of it but if you are not drinking water during the day that might be some of it too. Do you drink water during your day? If not, I would say give it a try, and if so you might be right.

Yes. All the time. Makes sense, since I'm losing water sweating! (Luckily, it's not a stinky sweat...)
As for burning calories...eh...there's enough of us plump MT's that I tend to think it's not significant.

That was my thought exactly. If massage burns calories, why have I gained weight since becoming an MT? :roll:

um...maybe as we burn those calories during a massage we work up an appetite? darn it... :roll: all the same, it's nice to know some calories are being burned off...or..maybe our clients calories are getting sucked up by our energy and replacing the ones we lost!!!! ahhhhh!!!! :shock:

I KNOW I'm not burning extra calories. So much of my time is spent standing in one place or sitting on a stool. Maybe if I were doing stress reduction massage or Shiatsu. I can work up a really good sweat doing those because I'm moving so much, especially the Shiatsu, which is an hour+ of fancy footwork, with TaiChi lunges, squats, and climbing up and down off the table.

When I started my first massage job in a spa I assumed I'd be using a lot of calories and so felt that I needed to constantly refuel. I refuelled on bad things like potatoe chips and chocolate which resulted in me gaining weight. Althought massage is quite physical work I've found it more muscle building than cardiovascular.

Iknow what you mean, i really do believe we tone muscles with our squats and lunges during massage..

I'm ALWAYS hungry after giving a massage, but I try not to grab "bad" snacks. Unfortunately I still tend to grab granola bars, which aren't the best for you, but better than a bar of chocolate.

I haven't lost any weight since becoming a therapist. However I have gained muscle. (That counts for something right?)
