Hi,
I have been using some Bowen and have been impressed with it. It triggers self-healing. It is very easy on the therapist.
The only tricky part is that the client should not receive any ther type of bodywork for about 5 days before and after a session.
The other tricky thing is that it really works so that folks don't have to keep coming back in all the time!
All the best.

You're probably after something you can do in Australia that you can't do elsewhere. Bowen Therapy is taught a lot out here, and I know the January 06 issue of Massage Magazine had an article that sparked quite a bit of interest.

I also think therapists who specialize very narrowly are awesome. I sent my mother to a Bowen therapist last fall when she could barely walk with her RA flare-up. The therapist had her going back up and down stairs in only 3 sessions. Pretty dramatic, and as far as I know, she didn't mix it up.

Bowen work in conjunction with CST might be helpful. Had a severely spasming client that I referred out to a colleague who is extremely skilled with Bowen work. Between my CST and her Bowen work, the spasming subsided considerably.
That's not saying it will "fix" torticollis", but, it might just be able to give some relief.
Thought just came to mind: Is the individual with torticollis on meds? My autistic client is on meds that really, quite literally bend his neck so far to the side and then back that you would think it would snap off at the shoulders. When he's not on the meds, or they are greatly reduced, then the torticollis isn't so pronounced.

Hi Charliesdad:
Welcome to MassagePlanetL!
Not sure where in Canada you are. Who did you take your training with?
I also do chair massage (in Southern Ontario) and have taken myofascial release seminars. I incorporate MFR into chair massage all the time - and have been asked to teach chair massage practitioners how to do just that, and I probably will, some time this fall.
MFR is great. I keep meaning to go for a Bowen session and I think there are many similarities. I love long MFR appointments, 60-90 minutes. I love looking for restrictions and then releasing them. People feel so much better afterwards.
Take care, Marion

Thanks for feedback
ย
Thanks everyone for the welcome and for excellent feedback and info (esp pueppi!) and sorry for the delay in posting. I have now modified my profile so that I am alerted when there are replies to my posts/threads.
I will remain open to Bowen for others although I don't think it's quite my cup of tea or particularly effective for my type of pain problem issue which is quasi-fibromyalgia. Shiatsu has been helpful as it seems particularly effective in promoting deep relaxation from which I get muscle healing.

My chiro and his wife [my best friend] are both certified Bowen practitioners. It is very common to treat, leave the room and then come back. That time of silence and rest is meant to help the body release and begin reprogramming/healing itself. When done properly by someone specifically trained in Bowen work, it can be quite helpful and quite healing. Yes, it does seem odd that the person treats you then leaves the room, but, it does help your body do what it is supposed to do......

Bowen is like the "homeopathy" of bodywork modalities. Here in the U.S. it is common to be charged the same amount (if not more) than a standard hour massage costs. The first session can run anywhere from an hour to two hours depending on how much unwinding the body requires.

I don't do Bowen, nor have I received it, but I understand that is the nature of the treatment. That in the 'down time' you are processing what happened in the bit of work prior. I think of it like acupuncture, the practitioner may come and go as the needles are doing their thing. I'm not really interested in working in such a way or receiving in such a way...so it doesn't appeal to me personally, but people speak of great results with it.
BTW, welcome to MassagePlanetL!

Bowen Therapy
ย
Hi all,
I'm brand new here! I'm a chair massage and relaxation massage practitioner in Canada trying to learn and grow my bodywork skills.
I did a search on the above topic and learned a bit from a couple of threads. I'd like some feedback though:
I had my first Bowen Therapy session from a naturopath who is helping me with various health conditions. She did a few minor tissue moving techniques and a bit of stretching in the Bowen way: a couple of minutes of hands-on and then she left the room, some more gentle hands-on manipulation and then left again. Maybe she was actually with me for about 15 minutes. She charged me $75, which is the standard fee here in Ontario Canada for 30 minutes with a naturopath when I get her undivided attention and access to her knowledge and skill. Now I'm not saying that bodywork has to be done with a lot of physical effort to be valuable and worth paying for, but does anyone else think that $75 for 15 minutes of Bowen is a bit excessive?
I'm not sure that Bowen is all that relaxing, anyway, with someone coming in and out of the room. But I'm trying to be openminded to this new modality.
Still, I pay an osteopath $65 for 45 minutes and he has almost as much training as a naturopath.
I guess I'm whining so I'll stop. Any feedback on the above? Have others benefitted from Bowen treatments or incorporated Bowen successfully into their other techniques?
Thanks.
