NAME: Nanci Newton, LMT
TITLE: Owner of The Healing ZONE Massage, Licensed Massage Therapist, 241 Russell St., Hadley
WEBSITE: TheHealingZoneMassage.com
AGE: 51
WHEN THE BUSINESS STARTED: Co-founded The Healing ZONE in 2000 and continued on my own beginning in 2007.
HOW MANY ON YOUR STAFF: Six
WHAT YOU DO: I am a business owner, massage therapist and educator. In my work, I strive to create a “healing zone,†a place where all who enter feel safe and comfortable while receiving the care and treatment they need to feel better. As I travel and teach, I see the profession of massage therapy becoming more accepted as a means of complementary treatment both in the medical field and in the mainstream. Quality massage is good medicine.
EXPERIENCE: I was a middle school band director for many years before beginning my massage therapy business. Teaching is what I love to do. I have been teaching advanced massage therapy courses with national educators Carole Osborne (prenatal massage) and Tracy Walton (oncology massage) for over 10 years. I continue to see clients regularly because they teach me the most.
THE MARKET: Anyone seeking the benefits of massage, reduced stress and anxiety as well as pain relief. So, athletes in training, people with chronic health issues and pregnant women, oncology patients and their caregivers.
HOW YOU REACH OUT TO IT: I have always believed the saying that goes something like “you get more when you give,†so I donate my services to local events, schools and businesses regularly. I offer free workshops and talks about the benefits of quality massage to reach out and help or teach without the expectation of anything in return. It is an incredibly powerful feeling to simply give.
WHAT FINANCING HURDLES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THEM? Well, a debilitating broken leg (from my nine-minute roller-blading career) landed me on the couch unable to drive or work for almost a year. Yeah, that took a bit to bounce back from.
KEY TO SUCCESS: Listen ... really listen to what people are saying and make connections with people. One word more comes to mind: Trust.
CHALLENGES: Making time to take care of myself as much as I take care of others.
MISSTEP YOU LEARNED FROM: All of them, too many to list!
WHAT OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM YOU: That even if you are on the right track you will get run over if you just sit there. Do something, get involved and make the things you want to happen ... happen.
WHO HELPED MENTOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY: Someone said to me once “surround yourself with those you admire,†so it would be all of the amazing folks I call my family and friends.
TOP GOALS FOR 2014: Take better care of myself so I may continue to take care of others.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS SEEKING BUSINESS SUCCESS: Reach out, always strive to learn from those willing to share, take what works and leave what doesn’t. Always get back up and live with passion.
PARTING THOUGHT: I often witness and touch unbearable pain in the work that I do, both muscularly and emotionally, and with support from professionals and attention to my own well-being I am able to continue to grow. Some days I find it hard to believe that I still wake up each day loving what I do and loving life.
