Ayurveda massage certification question

Hi,

I am Ayurveda holistic health consultant at PA andNJ.I have done graduation (BAMS ) and post graduation (MD ) in Ayurveda ,from India.Ayurveda is natural holistic health system originated in India.Panchakarma is a rejuvinative therapy program of Ayurveda.That includes whole body oil massage (called Abhyanga),head massage....etc.
I am not certified or licensed massage therapist in USA.I want to start my Panchakarma-Rejuvenation health center.
Can I do Ayurveda massage without holding a certification or license as a massage therapist in USA?especially in PA and NJ ?
What are the states of USA don't require license or certification for Ayurveda Massage?

Hi Archana,

Welcome to the board! As I understand it, most states won't see a difference between your panchakarma or ayurvedic massage and swedish massage.

As far as politics go, massage is massage, so no matter what kind of professional massage modality you are looking to practice you need to become certified. I don't know about PA, but my main practice is in NJ, they are accepting applications for the licensing as of right now, it isn't mandatory, but it will be shortly. I would definitely look into a school that is approved by the NCTMB, so that you can get that rolling so you can practice when the time comes.

Hi Arch,

I'd be more concerned about the panchakarma - are you intending on doing the full purgative Panchakarma routines? Having people take herbs for purgative reactions or enemas is probably even more of a concern than massaging them.

I'd reccomend contacting The Ayurvedic Institute http://www.ayurveda.com They're in Albuquerque, NM, but might be able to give you an idea of if/how to get your qualifications recognised, and if there is any well recognised Ayurvedic institute near you that you may help.

If you are only interested in practising Ayurvedic bodywork, everything applied to the skin, nothing taken internally, it means a massage license. It may be worth contacting local massage schools and seeing if anyone will give you recognition of prior learning for what you've done in India, at least for anatomy or something. Be warned that some schools resist giving recognition because they want you to pay for the whole course, or they may give you the recognition but make you pay for the whole course anyway, you just don't have to do as many subjects.

It is always difficult getting qualifications from another country recognised, so be prepared for some challenges, don't get discouraged. Good luck!

I am an Ayurvedic practitioner, and I may have an answer for you. Generally speaking, ayurvedic Massage is massage, and must be practiced by massage therapists. In certain states in the US, other licensed practitioners (such as chiropractors, RN's and MD's) within their scope of practice when giving massage.

When practicing Ayurveda in the US, there are many things to be careful of, including reccomending herbs. The foremost authority on the current laws is the National Ayurvedic Medical Association http://www.ayurveda-nama.org this organization is helping to lay the groundwork for practicing ayurveda in the US.
