Aromatherapy course (ITHMA)

Hello all - I am just about to start my Aromatherapy course (hurrah). Well, I say almost it actaully begins in April next year... but I am just so excited and it's wonderful to read all your posts. I was just wondering really if any of you peeps had studied at the Insitute of Traditional Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy (ITHMA)? The college is based in the heart of Regents Park here in London -the principle is Gabriel Mojay....

Just very excited really and inquisitive and would love to read your thoughts/experiences/advice....

I haven't been on Gabriels aromatherapy course but have heard him speak and have his wonderful book on Aromatherapy for healing the spirit. He is a gifted man and I wish you all the best on attending his diploma course, you should really enjoy learning with him.

Hello hello, thank you for your responses - I will almost certainly keep you posted. It's a very exciting time, and I have been wanting learn Aromatherapy for many years now, and it was Gabriels name that kept on appearing - a sign methinks. Having completed my ITEC Diploma in Holistic massage this year I knew this was my next step. Sadly ITEC didn't do much for me. When I say that I mean it didn't really touch on what I wanted to learn. The main focus was on the EXAM and the sequence for the exam, there was no room or teaching for responding to individual clients needs - but it was a great basis or platform from which to leap onwards from. If you know what I mean? Reading all the posts here I think that between now and April it would be a good idea to start familiarising myself with all the essential oils!

Slightly off-topic, but Trixxi, your experience with ITEC really is the result of your teacher, not ITEC. ITEC has put out a syllabus and an exam standard with minimum hours of teaching for each module. It is up to the college to make of it what they will. Unfortunately, for most colleges, they just want to cram you through the examination... :-(

Hmmm - I think that ITEC do need to take some responsibility for how they are perceived - I too did ITEC AP&M - exam was at the end of June - we had to wait until the end of October for the results and then a further 4 weeks for certificates... They were downright rude when a class mate called them to ask what was going on .
And I have enquired to them on 2 separate occassions ( you would think I would have learned the first time) about colleges that run particular courses and never received a response.

As a result I have done all my other qualifications with other awarding bodies.

Janey, you are right. They are hopeless in this respect and I think they really should get their act together. They do NOTHING for their students...no backup, no support, nothing.

However, agree with dazzakoh...my ITEC courses were great. Did A and P separately and to a fantasticly high level, did massage also great, then did aromatherapy with great teacher and then moved North West and did reflexology at a different college. Not brilliant, but good teacher who passed on quite a bit as was practicing therapist.

So, nothing for ITEC to lay claim to there me thinks.

I'm currently studying at ITHMA - I researched a lot of courses and narrowed it down to Neal's Yard, Tisserand or ITHMA.

Gabriel is really helpful if you do have any queries before you start. However, now that you've chosen this course I'm sure you've done your research and have reasons for choosing this particular one. Every course and every person attending is different and one person's opinion may not be the same as another's - it's often best to just give it a go. (I think that makes sense when I read it back!)

Of course, if there are any specifics you want to know about the course content then I'd be happy to try to answer from my point of view so far! I had also been thinking about pursuing my studies for some time and it feels like an adventure to jump in, meet people and get learning and experiencing aromatherapy.

Staying on-topic with Aromatherapy courses: Trixxi and Welshbee - have fun on your course. And then, after the get your qualification, the learning really begins. Kind of like your driving test - you do everything you need to do to pass the examinations.

After that, you do everything you need to do to help your clients. And trust me, especially in the still-developing area of aromatherapy, what we did to pass our exams and what we would do to help our clients could very well be different!!!
