Aromatherapy assignment.

Afternoon everyone,
I hope you are well?

Today I have received my first Aromatherapy assignment for my VTCT Level 3. It's all about essential oils, I am progressing quite well with my research, (got loads done in 2 hours!!!) However I really want to wow my tutor, as I have begun the course late, so I was wondering if you guys new of any good sources of info both on the net or in books, in these areas;

The chemical groups that the oils belong to, i.e Esters.and the chemical properties of each essential oil. Also, if anyone has any info on the history of the oils, i.e when they were first used and their purpose?

For your first assignment it would seem to me that you have an enormous task on your hands. Can you just confirm to me whether they are asking you for the chemical properties of each essential oils?

The best book I think at the moment is The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy by Salvatore Bataglia its quite expensive. Here's a link to the IFA site and the books they recommend.

Presumably you have been given a booklist on your course. Sorry but I can't do your homework for you though but I can point you in a useful direction. I'll give you a few tips though about when they were first used - the father of modern aromatherapy is Rene Maurice Gattefosse a French chemist.

The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy by Salvatore Bataglia indeed is great aromatherapy guide but not so cheap. If you want to buy something else, have a look at this list with Aromatherapy Books that i found.

We have been given 9 different oils to resaerch into..it's a hefty project i agree, but i have until after xmas to hand it in.

I apologise if it seemed i was asking for someone to complete my homework for me, i really was only looking for a few tips.

Only 9?? We had to research all the oils on the essential list plus the ones on the optional list and have it in by February!

Ulla-Marie Grace's book has something on chemical properties IIRC.

I'm glad to hear its only 9 oils for the moment that's more than enough to keep you going. Is it 50 oils you have to study overall? It's quite helpful if you can get someone to swap with, who can also be a study mate.

A study buddy...now that is a good idea!

ChrisRams..The assignment that we have been given is to replace one of the VTCT written tests, so i'm sure we will have to have a good knowledge of all the oils. (and if it is not something that the college stipulate, it would definitley be something that i would make myself familiar with.)

The aromatherapy that i am studying is as part of my level 3 VTCT alongside anotomy and physiology, swedish massage and reflexology. Would that make it less in-depth?

Sounds like you're on the same course I did last year! It's really only an introduction to aromatherapy, but you can apply the principles you learn and the research you do to other oils that are not on the syllabus. Have fun!

Yes it was very useful. I've been studying aromatherapy for about 15 years now, but I needed "saloncraft" for want of a better word - massage routines and how clinics work, and physically I was in better shape than I have been for years, so I took the plunge and I certainly don't regret it.
