Aromatherapist & spine fusion

Hi there !

I have always wanted to train as an aromatherapist. The only thing that has stopped me so far is the fact that I have a spinal fusion L4/5 S1. It was done 17 years ago and I have carried 2 children since. I cycle and am fairly active (lifting my 3 year old isnt a problem) do you think this would cause any difficulties in my chosen therapy ? or will I learn to adapt ? I shall be grateful for your replies.

i was taught by ITEC, and they state that you cannot massage a pregnant woman, this is a contradication, so who is right, do they change from governing bodies, so what is the correct many thanks

I think Child misunderstood the message, but to answer your question, I feel that you can massage pregnant women, for example a foot massage would probably be greatly appreciated.
There are certain aromatherapy oils which should not be used if pregnant, so of course not with those.

I would not do a 'laying down' massage as that would be likely to be uncomfortable for the mother to be, but say a foot massage or a neck massage and such should be fine.

To undecided,
I think you would be ok, it may be that you would not be able to do massages for 12 hours a day, but then nobody would like to do that anyway.
I am sure you would be able to do it, and the benefit of aromatherapy is not only about massage, you can make your own beauty products, cleaning products and bath products....so even if you did not do massages fulltime after the course, I think it would still be beneficial to you.

Thank you Amaris for your reply. As you say if I only did one or two massages a day at least I would be doing something that I wanted to do and working with al those lovely oils that has got to be good !

You may want to consider facial rejuvenation and Indian head message. They can be done sitting down and incorporate essential oils.

you would also be taught about posture for preservation of self anyway, and im sure you are probably already aware of this anyway!

I had a very long spinal fusion when I was 13 after damaging my back in a fall and developing very severe scoliosis. I n the 40 years since then I have done everything I wanted to - work as a journalist, long hours etc, skied, hill climbed and had two sons.

I have completed my aromatherapy course last year and did my two case studies one after the other. I found that if I am working with a massage table I was fine and if I felt a bit tired I sat down to do the head. Basically if you want to do it go ahead, just don't book people in without a break once you've set up as a practitioner.

Back ache is par for the course with spinal fusions, but I found that when giving a massage it also helped me to relax and any aches and pains vanished before the end of the treatment.
It will give you a lot of pleasure, so go for it.
