aroma oils for presentation

Hi folks

i am giving a talk on aromatherapy to health professionals this thus: i have to choose ten oils to let them smell as an introduction to aroma...oils they will smell blind and comment on ie: do they remind them of anything/like them/hate them etc.....can you think of ten ideal oils

i am thinking citrus...lime, orange, lemongrass, sensual...and 'seasonal' like myrrh....don't want to make it too hard or easy to guess the oils/comment on them though...


any suggestions

How about citrus, florals, resins, spices and herbs, a couple from each

Give them one easy one like lavender so they don't think they have failed to get any ...

I wouldn't use any obscure oils - but ones they have likely to have heard of. Also if it is aimed at healthcare professionals, how about choosing oils which have had more research done on them in reference to ailments, e.g. tea tree, lavender, thyme, rosemary, plai, frankincense etc.

I've done this in talks and presentations - good fun. I have some strips of stiff card - abt 2"x6" with the oil info written on, and then staple a cotton pad with a few drops of the oil to the top. Its also nice to then hold 2 or 3 in a fan to get the idea of a blend. Also safer than handing your expensive bottles round.

hi there - thanks for that tip amanda; i have another talk to do in october and think that's a really good exercise. In the end i thought about your posts and tried to pick oils they might know...i began to see it was pretty pointless using say benzoin when i'd never ever heard of it before my aroma course.

here's the ten; lavender - they all got it, mandarin, sandalwood, chamomile, fennel, basil, ginger, lemongrass, peppermint and patchouli....

i also asked them to tell me what the oils reminded them of and got some interesting 'memories' of grandads and creosote-soaked summers etc which was nice.

then i asked them to choose their fave and i showed them a ten minute hand massage routine and three reflexology points on the hand which they LOVED. one woman shrieked when a certain point on her hand (spine) was touched and it turned out she'd had a bad accident at that point in her spine and said the contact with her hand sent a 'reflex' to that exact point on her back; this was great as afterwards many senior nursing staff said they were initially sceptical about therapy being anything but 'nice and relaxing' but would not be much more open-minded.

Three weeks on and those same staff have clearly given this a big billing as referrals from staff on my ward has increased dramatically.

so it was worth a night without sleep and a poorly tum (all nerves) to present this.
