Any good bars in Pudong?

Not sure of the number but basically it's a five minute walk from Carrefour, right next to Yangao Lu. Best bet is to go straight up Yangao Lu and instead of turning right at Yuenshen Lu for Carrefour/Jin Qiao, turn left at Yuenshen Lu for the bars. There's 3 bars in close proximity. One is the C'mon Bar, which shows Premiership football and has a pool table, another is Adsbar which is small and smoky and generally a Chinese bar, but like myself, a few ex-pats too. Dice games and drinks but nothing else from these two bars. The Like Bar is next to Adsbar. It's big and dark and the neon sign outside reads "LAIK BAR" not Like Bar, but the cards say Like Bar.

By the way. The massage place on Changyi Lu is called the Old Pipe. I just thought this was a humourous term as a pipe can be 'smoked'... know what i mean? It's not a normal reference for blow job or anything, just fits with the massage place name. Tips here vary. Tommy tank for 100 - 150RMB, BJ for 150 - 300RMB, depending on how good you are at saying no and 'pretending' not to care. FS is at the descretion of the masseuse. In addition to what Asia Traveller explained, rememeber : The further the BBS from a key city iconic centre (ie some international hotel, tourist place etc) - the cheaper the BBS becomes.

The cheaper and further they get from these centres....the more "localized" they become and of course you must try to make sure you're not somewhere way off from the main roads.

I wouldn't usually use that terminology ("pipe massage"!) but was just keeping my wording consistent with the O.P. It read strange to me too, but hey, different folks in different countries use different words to describe the same thing. Yes, hand job for Y100. Full sex Y200.

The exotic services I was thinking about were along the lines of anal sex or basically whatever else comes to mind that wouldn't be seen in a sex scene on a raunchy R-rated movie, on free-to-air television, after about 9.30pm.

Condoms in China are listed on the packet as the same size in mm as in Western countries but to me the width is less than I would expect. The quality? Who knows. Probably ok but it is little trouble or expense to bring a packet with you from your part of the globe. Why bother looking for an Asian brand then even having 1% doubt about the quality. If you needed to use a condom bought in China though I'm sure it would be ok.

Most of the BBS have about 25% opaque covering on the windows. It provides very minimal coverage. The girls themselves are the shops' best marketing tools. It isn't in the owners' interests to not display them. In my part of Shanghai I know of only a couple of shops with so much coverage I can't see the girls. Personally, I would give that shop a miss. It could contain a gem, but not worth the risk with such an abundance of shops on the streets. I wouldn't step foot in the shop unless I was 70%+ sure I was interested in a girl inside and the only issues are: I get a bad feeling about the girl or shop / she looks very ordinary up-close / or I'm not satisfied with the price offered.

If you walk past very slowly and make eye contact, being a foreigner you will probably be invited to go in with smiles and waves. If not and the girls don't seem that enthusiastic about you or what they do inside the shop, it's probably a sign to give that shop a miss anyway.

Other seasoned posters have mentioned that sauna/spa places are probably more suitable for new travellers with no Mandarin skills. I prefer the BBS myself and have never personally been to a sauna/spa place but after reading the posts for the past few months I'd probably agree that sauna/spa is the better choice. Those opinions are probably correct, but the BBS aren't as difficult to navigate your way in-and-out successfully as one might think. Having said that, I'm happy with the BBS, find it a bit of a rewarding challenge and a very cheap night's entertainment.

Good rules to go by ... thanks. I just want to clarify a few more things:

"pipe massage with happy ending". I assumed "pipe" = a hand job. But what you said makes me wonder if a pipe massage is something different?

If a HJ = Y100 and FS = Y200, what exotic services are going to cost more than FS?

Also, are the condoms here in China safe? I don't want to catch anything just because I wanted to calm my horniness...

I was around Yangping Lu yesterday by Changshu Lu (where going east Yangping turns into Fumin). I saw a bunch of BBS there, both legit salons and those that don't even have a barber's chair in them. But the glass doors had sections that were a bit opaque and covered up my direct view of the girls sitting down on the couch so I couldn't really check them out. So what do you gentlemen do? Walk right up, take a look, make eye contact, and either stay or boot off to the next place?

Hi Mate,

I haven't visited the sauna/spa places here, having stuck to the odd barber shop. If you're after a pipe massage, from my experience the barber shops are the best value and if you choose well, you should have no trouble at all.

In PuXi (my side of the river) I would have a few beers then go out around 9.00pm. There are 20 odd such shops near my apartment. I would walk past each shop in the 3 or 4 main barber shop streets near here. I'd take a mental note of a young girl to my liking then keep walking until I'd made sure she was who I wanted, then go back.

These shops are unlikely to be on main/busy streets but in side streets.

FS is likely to set you back Y200, a pipe massage with happy ending Y100. I've been quoted Y50 after spelling-out what I want (probably the price for locals) but then been told it is just for the half-hearted 5 minute massage. It's another Y50 for the happy ending. Bottom line for me is don't pay more than Y100 for this service. Other more exotic services are likely to cost Y250-Y400.

These shops aren't set-up for scams unlike around Nanjing Street. But be careful. Leave your passport, wallet etc at home / in your hotel room. Only put Y300 in your pocket to avoid the very unlikely situation of having the hard word put on for exorbitant sums. Put an extra Y100 in a shoe or somewhere discreet for a taxi in case the Y300 goes astray.

Avoid shops where the shop owner is conspicuously in the window with the girls. They are probably ok but I don't know what type of guy owns a massage shop in Shanghai and I don't wish to find out. If you go there after about 10.30pm you will find most shop owners sitting in the front talking to the girls.

Have a quick look around before going in. These shops and prostitution in general is illegal in China. If a policeman or security guard is across the street, come back later or find another shop. They probably wouldn't care but better to be safe than sorry.

If you just want the pipe massaged, be prepared to be firm and reject offers of an extra girl, FS or other services. Sometimes they can be very persistant. I went into a shop once and when the owner realised a foreigner had gone upstairs he was yelling at another girl to come into the room upstairs and basically not leave until I agreed to her participating for double the fee. Be firm and keep saying no if you don't want this extra service.

Don't worry about the language barrier. Be prepared to walk out of the shop if you're quoted too high a price. Relax and enjoy. The girls are there to provide a service and if you leave valuables at home and find a shop in a quiet area all you have to worry about is the price.

wow this is great info ... i'm totally new here in Shanghai so forgive me if these are dumb questions:

1) for the Old Pipe massage, what is the cost range for tips?

2) for the bars, you say "... some of them will let you take them home". I assume it's for a fee?

3) jinqiao sounds tempting, but i'll need to get a good map with streets in pinyin first ... the shitty one i have here tells me nothing about jinqiao as it's too far out


btw, i'm out by century park ... that place looks pretty dead from my current walks around there. I see a place on meihua rd that looks like they do massages in the main lobby there out in plain view, but i can't tell if there are any other extra activities going on. I'm also a little shy to walk in since i can't really speak any mandarin at all.

Where in Pudong you at?

You tried Chang Yi Lu? It's not far from the Novatel and Eton Hotels on Pudong Avenue. Basically it's behing the Eton Hotel.

There's 4 bars on there: The Sports Bar, The Old Tavern, Fan Bar and The Corner Bar. ALl got their own thing going on. The Sports Bar & Tavern has some Philly lasses in there as well as Chinese lasses. I know for a fact that some of them will let you take them home...

Best on that street though is The Old Pipe massage. It's RMB200 per hour and I recomment the 2 hours. Awesome massage. Hits all the right spots. I'm sure you know what I mean. The tips are not expensive for the service you get.

Further out, near Jin Qiao is the Like Bar on Yuenshen Lu. You can go and have a drink with Hassan the barman and then a girl will come up to you and start chatting. You have the option of taking her into the back for a tommy tank or a BJ (depending on the lass) for about RMB150/RMB200 or taking them home for a short time (RMB600) or long time (RMB1000). Not cheap, but if you get the right lass, you'll have the time of your life...

I know Pudong is the shits compared to Puxi, but since my place is closer, I was wondering if there are any recommended bars / pubs / lounges to go to if I were to score any action (paid or unpaid) ... grabbing a long cab ride home w/ a girl could be too tiring or worrisome, especially if the girl and cabbie both attempt to cheat me.
