I need ya'lls help.

I have a client that I see at the DC's office.

He is an above the knee amputee.

Motorcycle accident (#8!!)

He had a MRI done the other day he has 3 herniated discs ( I don't know where they are located) the dr. said it was ok. to get a massage.

When I give a massage I do a lot of stretching at the end of the massage. I was wondering if that would bother the discs?  He will be getting a shot this Friday and scheduled massage on Tuesday. Is that enough time or am I going to aggravate the situation.

It is possible that you could aggrevate things, but you may not.  I have a herniated disk in my neck below 2 bulging disks and stretching feels great.IMO, it depends on the severity of the herniation, whether there is radiculopathy, and if it is comfortable for the client.

Ok I'll bite what is radiculopathy (glad I don't have to pronounce it )??Since my room is a little bit on the narrow side do you have any recommended stretches. Some of the ones I have been doing I am space challenged. The room is a little narrow and I like to take the legs (or leg) straight and swing it to the side as far as it will go. I also like to cross the leg at the knee and pull the leg down onto the opposite side it gives a good stretch in the lower back and glutes.Trish

I would suggest speaking directly with the doctor you work with and let him know what plans you have for the massage and stretching of the client.  Make sure and speak in detail as to what you do, so that you can formulate a plan that will work for this particular client.  I think you, the DC and the client will be much more pleased with the results if you can get a chance to do this.

Radiculopathy is when there is numbness, weakness, or there is pain that is radiating due from an impingment or damage of a nerve.  If the herniation is pressing on the nerve and causing any of these problems, you may aggrevate things.Definetly consult with the Dr.
