AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Amarillo City Council took the first steps Tuesday afternoon toward getting rid of the new massage establishment ordinance.
As we previously reported, the new ordinance received plenty of pushback from Licensed Massage Therapists and business owners over some of the changes, which included surprise inspections.
Mayor Cole Stanley took full responsibility for the ordinance, calling it a mistake. He assured the owners that the ordinance needed a clean slate.
The city plans to create a committee, which will include some of those business owners, to work on a new policy.
The council also had an intense exchange with Interim City Manager Andrew Freeman over his recent reorganization of city staff, creating new positions.
Freeman defended his actions, saying he was well within his powers to do so. He said he did not violate the city charter.
Mayor Stanley and Councilman Les Simpson strongly objected to his moves, and the tense exchange went on for several minutes.
The mayor concluded that the lines of responsibility needed to be more clearly drawn to understand council's role in such moves.
