Allergy reaction after treatment..?

Hi! My client had an allergy reaction after a aromatherapy treatment, but she is not allergy to anything.
I was using lemongrass and lemon as she had severe headache. its has been 2 days now she found out her skin is itchy and red, what should I advise her to do?

Hi erica, its possible that your client has had a photosensitive reaction due to the combination of lemon oil and sunlight. Perhaps she didn't realise she was sensitive to the sun but phototoxic oils can cause extremereactions to those who are sensitive.If this is thecase the best advice you can give her is to protect her skin from the sun until the rash dies down and even then be careful. It may be necessary for her to take antihistamine tablets and you could maybe advise her to drink nettle tea, which is also helpful for allergic reactions. Has she been for aromatherapy before and if so which oils do you usually use? How soon after treatment did the rash appear and where on her body?

Hi hhc, thanks for the reply.

She had aromatherpy before somewhere elsebut she used to have lavender and something else cant remember.
during the consulation that she said she is not allergy to anything, it was late afternoon so i was chosing lemon & lemongrass, i have also told her while having these oils its better not to expose to sunlight.
she is a new client of mine, she just told me now that she found out her cheeks are itchy and red.
but she say she did wash her skin before she goes out but the weather was quite hot.. so i am quite confused what happended.

She'll be able to pick up nettle tea in any health food shop and antihistamines from boots or a chemist. Washing her skin may not have been enough if she went out in the strong sun within 24 hours of the treatment because the oil will have still been absorbed into the skin. Sometimes people are unaware they have a sun sensitivity problem until they use something that is phototoxic. However, it may just be that she's allergic toone of the oils that you used and that it has nothing to do with the sun, so make sure you tell her what you used so she can avoid them in future. Just out of interest do you do a patch test with her first?Did the rash only appear on her cheeks? What other areas did you use the oil on? Sorry about all the questions, its just hard trying to understand what went wrong when you don't know all the facts. Also if you speak to her again ask her if she's ever had any itching or rash after sunbathing or sunbed use in the past (if you haven't already that is). You did the right thing thoughby asking her to avoid sunlight, unfortunately people don't always do as asked. [sm=nature-smiley-008.gif]

My tutor told us only do patch test if people are having hypersensitive skin, andher skin was normal so i wasnt aware of.she did go out to the sun i guess thats why she had an allergy reaction.
Yeah the rashes on appears on cheeck but other part of the body!

I have been taught that lemongrass can be irritating and sensitising in some indviduals if not used with madarin in equal proportions.

The same client came back to me after the inflammation has been healed. this timeIused chamomile blue and lavender for her facial blend, again she hasgot an allergyreaction only on her face only. Sheis surely not allergy toanythingas i usedsweet almond oil for base oil.
I just wonder does anybody know whats should i tell her this time as i am sure this is not photosensitive. [&:]

Hi

What blend strength do you use? If the allergic reaction is only on the face, it might be that your blend is too strong. I would recommend a 1% maximum. Alternatively, you could try treating her using essential oils on her body but base oil only on her face.

Lemongrass is a potential skin irritant and I wouldnt use it on the face at all.

edited to add: yarrow is an excellent anti-inflammatory to use for allergic skin reactions. I have used it blended with aloe vera gel to good effect Alternatively, rose otto also has great anti-allergic/inflammatory properties.
