Advice on making skincare products

Hi, I'm just starting to experiment with making some skincare products for myself & have bought a few bases from Base Formula. I've made a facial wash sample and also plan on doing a facial cleanser & moisturiser, picking out the oils I feel will be most suitable for my skin type.

However, do you think it's best for me to stick to using the same oils in all products or is a bit if a variation OK? I wasn't sure if using the same 2/3 oils in everything would be a bit much, or alternatley, using more of a variety would also be a bit much. On one hand, I don't want to cause sensitisation by using the same oils all the time but I also don't want to cause any other irritation probs by using too many different ones (i.e, 2 oils in cleanser then 2 different oils in moisuriser), if you see what I mean?

I have recently qualified in L3 Aroma (VTCT) but this is my forst go at making some potions.

I think its ok to use different oils in each product, e.g. the citrus oils would be nice in cleansers and the more nourishing oils in your moisturisers. Alternatively, You could have a range of products with the same oils if its for a particular skintype. Get the measurements right when adding essential oils to your cream base, this should provent any irritations on the skin

My first attempt has gone horribly wrong. I made a cleanser using Base Formula's cleansing lotion with cucumber extract. Added Lavender & Chamomile at 0.5% dilution as recommended and my face turned into one big red blotchy mess

It did calm down, I used a rosewater & witchhazel toning spritz & I don't know if that helped but it was not the reaction I was hoping for from something "gentle & natural".

I'm hoping to devise an holistic facial treatment & can I just ask for anybody reading this, youorganic, or anyone else that may do facial treatment etc, if a client had this reaction what protocol do you follow?

Hi I had a client react in a similar way to their plain white lotion. Skin turned bright red and blotchy within minutes of using it. I kept massaging with plain carrier oil, but you can use whole milk too apparently. It neutralises it and the redness goes - it took about 20 minutes and then he had a cool shower which brought it all back to normal. I sent it back to them to test and find out why this happened as it wasn't the essential oils. I tested them separately a week later and no reaction, then tried the lotion on a patch test and he reacted immediately again. I never had any reply from Base Formula about what was wrong with the lotion! So I just don't use it again.
You could try Natural Touch cleansing base - its fine for the client who reacted so may be better for you? Love Melanie x
